Term 2, Week 8
Welcome back to the Grade 1/2 page!
Last week, our focus text was Mooie’s Stories. This collection of traditional stories helped students make connections to our previous text, Welcome to Country, and deepen their understanding of First Nations cultures and storytelling traditions. Students learnt about the significance of the Loddon River and explored creation stories, including those about the backwaters of the Loddon River, how crayfish got their red spots, why ringtail possums have a curly tail, and why the moon was created. Through these stories, students discussed how stories can be used to explain natural features, share important cultural knowledge, and strengthen connections to Country.
This week, our focus text is The Midnight Possum. Students have enjoyed following the adventure of how the Midnight Possum recued a baby possum who had fallen down a chimney. The students were able to summarise the main events of the story and reflected on the lessons the story teaches about courage, perseverance, and being brave when faced with challenges.
In Writing, students have been learning about procedures. We have explored the purpose and structure of procedural texts and practised writing clear, sequenced instructions. Students have enjoyed writing a variety of procedures, including How to Make a Disappearing Pot, How to Make a Sandwich, and How to Make a Paper Helicopter. It has been wonderful to see students using precise language and organising their ideas into logical steps.
In Mathematics, students have been developing a range of mental computation strategies to support their addition skills. We have been learning how to use doubles, near doubles, and the split addition strategy to solve problems efficiently. Students have been building confidence in recalling number facts and selecting appropriate strategies to solve addition problems mentally.
