Grade 3/4 News

Term 2, Week 8

Welcome back to the 3/4 page.

Over the past fortnight, our Grade 3/4 students have been busy learning, even with the shortened school weeks. They have continued to build on their understanding across a range of learning areas and are looking forward to the exciting events coming up over the next few weeks of school. As the weather gets cooler, please remember to send students with warm clothing to help them stay comfortable at school and to bring their laptops charged and ready as a tool for learning in the classroom.

Literacy

In Literacy, students have explored a variety of texts connected to our Topic unit, The Blue Marble. Through this learning, they have developed their skills in identifying key words, locating important facts, and summarising information effectively. Students have enjoyed learning about a range of fascinating animals, including axolotls, orcas, platypuses, and Tasmanian devils. Our language focus has included revising prefixes, suffixes, homophones, and plurals, with students looking to apply this knowledge confidently in their writing.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students have applied their understanding of money to a range of everyday situations, including using dollars and cents, making smart shopping choices, budgeting, calculating change, and rounding amounts. They also explored transaction fees associated with bank cards, which sparked some thoughtful and engaging discussions. Throughout the unit, students used a variety of problem-solving strategies, demonstrating persistence and growing confidence as they worked through challenges and explained their mathematical thinking by ‘justifying’ their strategies and choices.

Next Fortnight

In our Topic unit, Blue Marble, students will continue researching one specific endangered species. They will investigate the reasons their chosen animal is endangered and explore conservation strategies. Using this knowledge, students will begin advocating for positive change through a creative campaign. This will culminate in a final presentation showcasing their research skills and understanding of text structures and language features, all presented in an engaging poster display.

In Literacy, students will review the use of vocabulary, connectives, openers, and punctuation (VCOP) through a range of mentor texts and their own writing samples. They will select a written piece to revise and edit, while exploring different ways to publish their text to effectively engage their audience.

In Mathematics, students will develop practical skills in calculating perimeter and area. They will apply their understanding of these concepts to everyday problem-solving tasks and a mini design project where they will be encouraged to create their own adventure park.
