Leader of Year 9 Wellbeing

Mr Peter Robertson

As Year 9 comes to its final term, it feels strange thinking about how quickly the year has gone. It feels like just last month that we were finding out our classes and wondering what the year would bring. Suddenly we are nearing the end of the year and beginning to focus on the next, leaving behind everything that was built this year, including the friendships and memories we’ve made. Looking back, I realise that we are sometimes so focused on schoolwork, tests, assignments and everything else, that we forget to slow down and actually enjoy the moments we are in.

Recently, as a part of our English topic on Shakespeare, we had actors from Bell Education come to the college to reenact the story of ‘ Romeo and Juliet ‘. Something that stood out to me was how the characters got so caught up in everything happening around them, all the chaos and the drama. Although it may not be the main message of the story, it made me think about how, sometimes, we are so busy worrying about what is coming next that we forget to appreciate what is happening right now.

It is easy to get caught up in our own minor dramas and the constant race toward next year. However, as I watched the play, each scene constantly changing, it made me consider how I approach each day. I want to forget the stresses and problems and instead hold onto the relationships I have made. I want to live in the present and appreciate every moment as it happens, before it becomes a distant memory. When I think back on Year 9 in years to come, I will remember my friends, I will think of all the teachers that helped me and I will know that I was grateful for every moment.
