Melbourne University System Garden

In year 7 Science, students study a unit called Ecosystems. During week 9 some of the students walked over to the System Garden at Melbourne University to observe plant adaptations that help them survive in a particular environment:

They looked at the spiny conifer leaves and the overall tree shape that allows survival in cold snowy environs.

Observed cactus with their spines and body shape that deter predators and minimise water loss.

Walkes through grasses, with their abundance of seeds and rapid life cycles that allow them to make the most of favourable conditions.

Took note of flower shape, colour and perfume and how different species attract insects and birds with specialised feeding parts.

Finishing off with a walk through the cool rainforest section, with its large leaf plants designed to capture the light that filters through.
