Extension Program – Artist Workshop in Art & Technology

In Term 3 a selected group of senior art students participated in an artist run workshop with the support of The University High School Extension Program.

Former staff member, Naarm/Melbourne based contemporary artist and designer Eugenie Kawabata provided a sculptural production session. She took time out of busy schedule which was leading up to the Sydney Contemporary 2026 exhibition and the Paddo Sculpture Prize Exhibition opening, for which she has been selected as a finalist for the inaugural 2026 Paddo Sculpture Prize.

Eugenie’s practice transforms reclaimed textiles into sculptural works that occupy the space between sculpture, design object and imagined artefact. Her practice investigates the quiet, often overlooked dialogues within the natural world. She blends traditional craftsmanship with experimental processes and engages with reclaimed textiles to reimagine their potential.

Our students were given an overview of the processes Eugenie uses before they commenced activity that included stitching (hand and machine) and sculpting to give simple materials new form and possibility. The experience was grounded in a tactile, hands-on approach that is both physical and visceral.
