Holidays can be a great time to learn

Some of our precious historic sites run fabulous family activities during the school holidays. Here are two that you may be interested in.

Aw Yuck, That’s Gross!

Elizabeth Bay House, Tuesday, 7 and Thursday, 9 April, various session times

Explore the world of insects and bugs in this hands-on workshop where kids will discover the important role creepy-crawlies play in our world. They will enjoy a guided tour of Elizabeth Bay House, get up close with real Australian butterflies and have the opportunity to eat some bugs!

Macquarie Street Adventure

Macquarie Street, Friday, 17 April, 10am–3pm

Join us in the autumn school holidays for the Macquarie Street Adventure, a day of family fun proudly presented by Museums of History NSW, the Parliament of NSW and the State Library of NSW.

Enjoy free drop-in activities in the Hyde Park Barracks courtyard. Learn the historical art of knot-tying with macramé artist Carol Lamb from May and Myrtle, make your own convict love token, build a paper replica of the Hyde Park Barracks and try your hand at convict bricklaying.

Find out more about our free kids trails and drop-in activities across our museums on their website

Reading for pleasure or writing a journal of holiday adventures is a great way to exercise the brain during the break. The local library has a vast collection of age appropriate books for all school age children.

Year 12 Holiday Workshops

The upcoming break is an important opportunity to maintain momentum, now is not the time to take your foot off the accelerator. With most exams returned and valuable feedback provided, the holidays offer an ideal chance to consolidate notes, reflect on teacher advice, and address any areas for improvement. Completing a small number of practice HSC papers or revisiting your study techniques, particularly if current strategies are not delivering the results you hoped for can be especially beneficial. Time invested over these holidays will pay significant dividends in Term 2 and beyond, including into Term 3.

Sydney Catholic Schools are also offering a range of Holiday Workshops during the break. These online sessions are curriculum‑focused and designed to support students in specific subject areas. I strongly encourage Year 12 students to register their interest and take advantage of this guided learning opportunity. Registration closes this week, so please don’t delay. The workshop schedule is included below.
