Grade 5 News

Welcome to Week 8.
In Literacy, we have just finished reading War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. The novel was a hit with students, who enjoyed following Joey’s journey through the dangers and realities of war. Students have used their understanding of the text to write a persuasive piece responding to the question, “Should horses have been used in World War I?” We have seen some interesting and thoughtful arguments presented.
In Maths, we are focusing on multiplication and division. Students have been improving their knowledge of multiplication and division facts while expanding their skills in solving two-digit by two-digit multiplication problems. In division, students have begun using an algorithm to solve simple division problems and will soon start exploring division problems that include remainders.
Well done to our students for completing NAPLAN, even with some technical difficulties on Day 1. We are very proud of the way each student approached the tests with resilience and determination.
Congratulations to our Grade 5 Sustainability and Social Justice leaders, who received their badges at assembly on Monday. We know you will carry out your roles to the best of your ability. F.I.R.E. Carriers will receive their badges at assembly next Monday along with their ceremony.
On Wednesday, we have our excursion to Galen.
Students will participate in a variety of Galen subjects such as VCD, Sport and Recreation, Drama, and more. Students will need to bring their snack to have at Galen, but lunch will be provided.
We will present our first reading prizes at the Grade 5 Assembly on Friday. Please continue encouraging students to read for at least 15 minutes each day at home and filling out their reading diaries.
Ride2School Day is on Friday, and students are encouraged to travel to school by riding, walking, or scooting if possible. 5 Dean and 5 Chatwin will have their bike education lessons on Thursday as we will be at Galen during their usual PE times.
