Grade 6 News

English – Reading and Writing This term, Year 6 students have begun reading The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett. This powerful historical novel follows the journey of a blind French lieutenant during World War I and explores themes of courage, compassion, sacrifice, and the impact of war on individuals. As the story unfolds, students will examine how characters respond to moral challenges and difficult choices. Building on the text, students will be exploring the features of fables, focusing on their structure, purpose, and the moral messages they convey. Students will then apply this learning by planning and constructing their own fables, using strong characters and clear lessons for the reader.

Mathematics -In Mathematics, students are developing their understanding of the order of operations, using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) as well as brackets. They are learning how the order in which calculations are completed affects the final answer and practising applying these rules to increasingly complex number sentences. This work supports accuracy, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning.

Religious Education – Season of Lent In Religion, students are focusing on the season of Lent, a time of reflection, prayer, and preparation leading up to Easter. Students are learning about the significance of Lenten symbols such as the cross, ashes, and the colour purple, and what they represent in the Christian faith. They are also discussing the idea of sacrifice during Lent—giving something up or taking on positive actions to grow spiritually, help others, and strengthen their relationship with God. Through discussion and reflection, students are encouraged to consider how Lenten practices can be lived out in everyday life through kindness, generosity, and service.
