Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

Year 2 students have had a wonderful week of learning and sharing. In Integrated Studies, students confidently presented to the class about their special places, building speaking skills and learning more about what is important to others. In Auslan, students have been expanding their vocabulary and using signs to communicate in longer phrases, not just single words. Mathematics has been full of fun as students played games with dice, adding numbers and exploring how digits change value when moved to different place value positions. In Religious Education, students continued learning about Mother Mary and her importance in the Catholic faith. In Reading and Writing, students have been exploring the touching book One Photo, learning about memories, family connections, and caring for others.

Learning for the Week Ahead

Religious Education:

Students will continue learning about Mary and why she is important in the Catholic faith. They will explore stories from the Bible that show Mary’s love, courage and special role in the life of Jesus.

English:

Students will read and discuss stories by sharing their thoughts, feelings and personal connections. In Writing, they will create their own narratives using story parts such as characters, setting, problem and solution, while building expanded sentences with conjunctions such as because, but and so.

Mathematics:

Students will continue exploring place value and learning that the value of a digit depends on where it is placed in a number. They will use games, materials and number tasks to build confidence with tens, hundreds and ones.

Integrated Curriculum:

Students will investigate why places are special and important to people and communities. They will learn about memorials and places that are significant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, including their connection to Country.

Auslan:

Students will build their Auslan vocabulary and practise remembering more signs with confidence. They will learn by watching others and using signs in fun interactive games.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Students will learn about trusted adults and how to ask for help when needed. They will identify adults at school and home who help them feel safe, supported and cared for.

What you can do at home

  • Read together each night and talk about the story. Ask simple questions such as: Who was in the story? What happened first? How did the character feel?

  • Practise maths in everyday life by noticing numbers around you. Ask your child to read house numbers, compare prices, or say the value of digits in numbers (for example, in 245, the 2 means 200).

  • Talk and share signs together by asking your child to teach you an Auslan sign they have learned at school. Practising at home helps build confidence and memory.
