Jericho Community
Dear Families,
We are excited to share that students have begun reading our new class novel Leo and Ralph. So far, they have been enjoying getting to know the characters and engaging in thoughtful discussions about the story. This text will support the development of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency, as well as inspire our writing throughout the term. We encourage students to share what they are reading and learning with you at home.
Religious Education:
This week in Religious Education, students learned that May is a special month devoted to Mary, the Mother of God. They explored different titles of Mary and discussed their meanings, helping students deepen their understanding of Mary’s importance within the Catholic faith.
English:
In English, students have been practising handwriting by correctly forming horizontal joins to and from ‘o’, while building reading fluency through accurate and expressive reading. They are engaging with our class novel Leo and Ralph, responding to questions and developing their vocabulary. In writing, students are learning about narrative structure and are beginning to plan and write an action paragraph.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, students have been learning to use a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction equations. They are developing confidence in choosing appropriate strategies to solve problems and are also practising how to write equations that match a specific strategy. This helps strengthen their understanding of number operations and problem-solving skills.
Integrated Curriculum:
In Integrated Studies, students have been exploring how places are shaped by their features, environment, and people. They are learning to identify natural and human features, compare different places by recognising similarities and differences, and explain why places may vary. This helps students develop a deeper understanding of how environments influence the way people live.
Auslan:
In Auslan, students have been learning how to show the opposite of a sign by using head movements. They are practising how to shake their head while signing to clearly communicate meaning, helping to build their confidence and accuracy when expressing ideas in Auslan.
Social & Emotional Learning:
In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been developing their understanding of what bullying is and what it is not, and learning about the role of an upstander. They are exploring practical strategies to respond to challenging situations and discussing how they can use these strategies in real-life contexts. This learning supports students to build confidence in making safe, respectful choices and standing up for others.
