Grade 5 & 6 Media Arts

The Media Arts curriculum encourages students to explore how ideas and identities can be communicated through visual and digital media. Students have been creating a digital collage using Canva that represents their personal identity.

To build their artwork, students selected animals, colours, shapes and symbols that are linked to important values such as kindness, resilience, respect and creativity. They also researched role models who demonstrate these values in real life, helping them to connect their learning to the wider world. In addition, students chose their own symbols to represent values that are personally meaningful to them.

Students have also been learning about surrealist art, a style where artists combine unexpected images to express ideas and emotions. They used this style as inspiration when designing their collages, combining elements in creative and imaginative ways.

As part of their work, students created a word cloud in Canva. They listed values that are most important to them and arranged these words visually within their artwork to show meaning and importance.

Students are now developing their communication skills by filming short video presentations. In these recordings, they will present their collage and explain the choices they made, including the symbols, values and design decisions.

We are proud of the creativity and reflection students are showing in this unit.

We encourage families to talk with their children about the values and symbols they have chosen at home this week together.
