Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

What a jam-packed week it has been for our Year 6 students! They began the week by proudly receiving their Year 6 leadership badges, followed by supporting our school community through welcoming new families on school tours. Students also enjoyed a series of fun-filled sporting activities run by Year 9 students from St Peter’s High School, where they had a wonderful time and continued to demonstrate our school values of safety, respect, and learning.

We are so proud of the way our Year 6s are stepping up as leaders in our school.

Learning for the Week Ahead

Religious Education: In Religious Education, students are learning about the history and significance of Bethlehem and its connection to our learning community. They are developing their understanding of why Bethlehem is an important place in the Bible and its relevance within our faith.

In English, the students have been introduced to a new text, Us Mob Walawurru, co-authored by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka. Set in Central Australia during the 1960s, it is a story about identity, culture, and belonging. The novel follows Ruby, a young Luritja girl, as she navigates the challenges of balancing her cultural heritage with the expectations of the Western education system.

Mathematics: In Mathematics, students are learning to compare and order fractions using benchmark fractions (such as 0, 1/2, and 1). This helps them develop a stronger understanding of fraction size and confidently determine which fractions are larger or smaller.

Integrated Curriculum: In Integrated Studies, students are continuing to explore global perspectives by locating countries around the world and learning more about different communities and cultures.

Auslan: In Auslan, they are focusing on how the direction of their eyebrows can indicate whether a question is open or closed, and are practising asking and responding to closed questions using appropriate eyebrow movements.

Social & Emotional Learning: In SELS, we are learning to recognise and value the strengths in others. Students are developing their ability to identify strengths in their peers and explain how these strengths help to build respectful and positive relationships within our classroom community.
