Senior School update

Although we are already into Week 5, I would like to warmly welcome everyone back to the Senior School for Term 3.

Formal and Exams

Last term came to a particularly busy conclusion, with exams and the Year 11 and 12 Koonung Formal. The Senior School Team is incredibly proud of the way our students conducted themselves throughout both of these events. The respectful manner in which students treated one another and their peers during the examination period was a wonderful demonstration of our commitment to excellence through endeavour, enabling everyone to perform at their best.

Our senior students also enjoyed a fantastic evening of dancing, bringing the term to a memorable close. A sincere thank you to the Formal Committee and the Senior Team for their hard work, organisation and contribution to making the evening such a success.

Subject Selections

The opening three weeks of Term 3 have involved the important process of subject selection for all Year 9, 10 and 11 students. We would like to thank parents and staff for the valuable support they have provided as students considered their options, discussed their interests and made their selections.

We recognise that this process has been particularly motivating for many of our Year 10 students, and we encourage them to make the most of the remainder of the semester by continuing to work diligently as they prepare for the significant transition into VCE.

It also prompted some rich discussions about preparing for VCE and additional subject support; this includes:

  • Academic coaching and mentoring occurs Monday - Wednesday after school. Please contact the senior team to book in a meeting time. This may include study techniques and habits, time management, managing stress,  and assessment preparation.

  • Maths Help sessions can be accessed after school and appear on students' Compass timetables. We strongly encourage students to attend these opportunities.

  • Establishing a strong routine at home that adopts the habits of a senior VCE student. This includes prioritising sleep, minimising distractions and revise prior to assessments.

Year 12

From next week, our Year 12 students will have fewer than seven weeks remaining of new content in their secondary schooling. It has been pleasing to see increasing numbers of students making use of the Senior Centre for quiet study both during and after school. We encourage them to continue making the most of these study opportunities and working collaboratively as they approach the final rounds of assessments over the coming weeks.

This message was reinforced during a recent session led by Mr McNeil, which encouraged students to find a healthy balance between prioritising their studies and enjoying this important stage of their schooling. This was coupled with the final session from guest speaker Ben Pettingill who discussed the importance of overcoming adversity to strive for personal best during the final stages of Year 12. We will continue to send out practice exams and resources in preparation for the end of the year.

We encourage all Year 12 students to take advantage of the knowledge and experience of our Careers Team as they work through their VTAC applications during the term. Thank you to our Career's Leader Karen Riding for providing both an informative and clear session for all our Year 12 students. It is important the entire cohort makes a time to meet with the careers team to discuss their pathway planning before the end of term.

Year 11 and 10

Our Year 10 students have made a positive start to the term, beginning their new electives and adjusting to classes with different teachers and classmates. Meanwhile, our Year 11 students are well underway with Unit 2 and are developing a clearer understanding of what they can expect during their final year of VCE.

Well done!

It has been an incredibly busy time and therefore a testament to our students dedication to balance extra-curricular activities and their study.

  • The Central Australia and Ski Camp students have now returned for their time away. It has been really pleasing to hear and witness both their excellent behaviour and engagement with the activities and each other.

  • The Mamma Mia Production. It was not only amazing to see such talented performances from senior students but hear about their leadership to other during the busy time.

  • Well done on those students who continue to represent the school at different sport including the recently victorious chess tournament.

  • Our leaders within different domains who have a profound impact guiding junior students.
