Celebrating NAPLAN Success 2024

The results of the recent NAPLAN tests arrived early this term and have been posted to families.

We are proud of all our students for their participation and effort in the NAPLAN tests. Regardless of the outcome, each student’s dedication and willingness to do their best are highly valued and commendable. Every student who participated has shown resilience and determination, and we celebrate their commitment.

On July 17th, we celebrated student academic achievements during our start-of-term assembly. We acknowledged those students who have shown outstanding academic excellence by achieving top marks in their respective subjects. The Academic Excellence Awards were presented to students who attained the highest average percentage across all assessments in their subjects. Their dedication, and commitment to excellence have set a high standard for our entire school community.

Honouring the Success of our Alumni Community

Our college started an Alumni program in 2021 to connect former students (Alumni) with the school to inspire and help current students. Our Alumni program has blossomed since 2021. Many alumni have engaged in school events to highlight to our current students the positive impact that attending a public school has had on their lives and careers.

Here are three biographies highlighting our alumni’s success.

Rema and Noor Othman- sisters, business partners, Alumni giving back to their community.

Rema and Noor Othman, graduates of 2014 and 2015 respectively are making a big impact in the world. After completing High School at Wyndham Central College, Rema went onto study Conveyancing and started her own conveyancing company. Noor went onto study Law at Victoria University and later Melbourne University and since graduating worked in law firms to gain experience before starting Othman Lawyers with her sister Rema.

They have given back to their school community by not only coming back to speak to current students but also by donating a considerable scholarship for students at their old school. This enabled students to be supported financially during their year 11 and 12 year. Hearing the sisters speak at the Alumni session, Legal Studies students at Wyndham Central College were inspired to apply for law after completing school.

Krushnadevsinh (Kano) Ravalji:

Alumni giving back to their community.

Kano is an award-winning speaker, event MC, consultant, facilitator and the founder of Third Culture Australia. Kano works with young people and multicultural communities to promote inclusion, equity and leadership. Kano worked with the North Melbourne Football Club to encourage multicultural people to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations and conducted research with the Australian National University and UNICEF into the experiences of young people with institutionalised racism. Currently, Kano is on a mission to share his message of inclusion across the world and encourage others to join him in creating a more just and accepting world!

After completing his high school at Wyndham Central College in 2017, Kano found that further study wasn’t for him, and he forged his pathway in youth advocacy and working with Culturally and Linguistically diverse groups. Some of Kano’s volunteer work includes Committee of Management, Young Gujju’s Of Victoria,

Youth Council Member Youth, Commission for Children and Young People Commission for Children and Young People, Youth Advisory Group Youth Advisory Group Headspace, Part of Headspace Werribee YAG (Youth Advocacy Group), Western Young People's Independent Network (WYPIN) Committee Western Young People's Independent Network (WYPIN) Committee, Centre for Multicultural Youth Centre for Multicultural Youth Volunteer, Student Mentor and Facilitator.

In addition to this long list, Kano has come back to speak at his old High School multiple times to inspire our current students. He will attend this week’s Multicultural Week Celebrations. He is a proud public high school graduate giving back to his community in a big way.

Parent Student Teacher Conferences Tuesday 17th September from 11am – 7pm

Wyndham Central College will be providing the opportunity for you and your child to discuss their progress with their subject teachers at Parent- Student -Teacher Conferences to be held on: Tuesday 17th September from 11:00am to 7:00pm. Please save the date in your calendar.

The primary focus for our College is the success of our students. A positive partnership between the College and home is critical to this success being achieved. Parent- Student -Teacher Conferences are of great benefit to parents, students and teachers to help develop a strong working relationship that will positively impact your child’s learning, engagement and wellbeing.

Implementation of the Amy Berry Engagement Model for Year 7-12 Students

We are excited to inform you about a new initiative we are implementing for our Year 7-12 students: the 'AMY Berry Engagement Model'. This model is designed to explicitly teach students the language and behaviours of engagement, providing them with valuable tools to enhance their learning experience and enhancing the partnership between teachers and students.

Benefits for Students

Enhanced Self-Awareness: Students will gain a deeper understanding of their own learning processes.

Improved Academic Performance: By recognizing and striving for higher engagement, students are likely to see improvements in their academic work.
Life Skills: The engagement model teaches valuable life skills such as self-reflection, goal setting, and perseverance.

Parent Involvement

Parental support is crucial for the success of this initiative. We encourage you to engage in conversations with your child about their learning experiences and the concepts they are learning through this model. Your interest and involvement can greatly enhance their engagement and motivation.

Information Session

To provide you with more detailed information about the Amy Berry Engagement Model so that you can engage in conversations with your child, we will be hosting an information session during Parent Student Teacher Conferences on 17th September at 2pm and a repeat session at 5pm. We warmly invite all parents and carers to attend.

Khanmigo a Valuable AI Learning Resource for Families

We are excited to share a resource that can support your child’s learning journey at home: Khanmigo. The Khan Academy, a comprehensive online educational platform has offered a wealth of resources for students of all ages and grade levels for some time. Now they have released Khanmigo.

Khanmino is an AI-powered personal tutor that offers tutoring and it is ethically designed with safety and learning as a top priority. Khanmigo covers math, humanities, coding, social studies, and more. You can get personalised tutoring on every exercise, video, and article on Khan Academy. Khanmigo doesn’t just give answers. Instead, with limitless patience, it guides learners to find the answer themselves. It will walk students through the solution and ask questions so they can work it out themselves rather than just get the answer.

For a $4 monthly subscription, Khanmigo can supplement classroom learning, provide homework help and it can be accessed at any time.

We encourage you to explore Khanmigo as a resource that can help reinforce classroom learning, build strong foundational skills, and foster a love of learning.

Ready to Learn Mondays Session 1

"Ready to Learn Monday" continues session 1 at the AVID Centre each week. This session is designed to help our students keep their AVID Binder organised and gather any necessary materials, such as binder books, and other requirements, to ensure they are fully prepared for a successful week of learning ahead. Well-prepared students are better equipped for academic success. Our goal is to ensure that each student has everything required to make the most of their learning experience and stay organised throughout the week.

During the session, our AVID Leader, Ms Cole, will be present to assist students in locating their required materials and addressing any needs they may have to be prepared to learn.

Please encourage your child to access this support when needed, as it will undoubtedly contribute to their preparedness and overall performance in the classroom.

A Strategy for Success: Ongoing Revision and Cornell notes

As an AVID Highly Certified School, we are committed to providing the best possible support to our students in their academic journey. One of the essential skills we focus on is effective note-taking using the Cornell note-taking system. We have observed that students who practice this method regularly show significant improvements in their learning outcomes, confidence, and overall success.

We ask for your support and encouragement at home to reinforce this valuable skill. Using the 10-24-7 method, which has been extensively researched and proven to be effective, can greatly benefit your child's academic progress. The 10-24-7 method involves the following steps:

Review and Revise: Encourage your child to review and revise their notes, actively circling key vocabulary and underlining key information. Taking a few moments to go over the day's material helps reinforce the concepts and ensures better retention.
Formulate Questions: The following night, prompt your child to formulate questions based on the notes they took in class. This helps them develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter and prepares them for any potential assessments.
Create Summaries: By the end of the week, have your child create summaries of the week's material. Summarizing information in their own words helps solidify knowledge and enhances their ability to recall information during assessments and exams.

We believe that implementing the 10-24-7 method will not only improve their academic performance but also build confidence and instil valuable study habits that will serve them well in the future.

Course selection

The course selection process for the upcoming academic year is being finalised. Our students, with the guidance of their families and teachers, are in the process of selecting subjects and programs for Years 9, 10, 11, and 12 in 2025. We believe that this crucial

step in their education will pave the way for a successful and fulfilling learning journey.

On Tuesday, 23rd July, we hosted the Subject and Program Expo. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for families to explore the diverse range of subjects and programs we offer. Our teachers passionately showcased the various options available, immersing attendees in the enriching activities and experiences our school provides.

For those who attended the expo, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your active participation. Your engagement in this event plays a significant role in helping your child make informed choices and discover new opportunities for personal growth and academic excellence.

For families who could not attend the expo our staff are readily available to provide information or answer any queries you may have about the subjects and programs available for your child's year level.

Homework Club

A reminder that Wyndham Central College offers Homework Club Wednesdays in the Monash Building from 3:10 pm to 4:00 pm. Homework Club is facilitated by experienced classroom teachers and provides support to students who self- nominate to attend. Teachers support students who may be having difficulty with their classwork, assignments, homework or who like a place and space in which to work that is supported by teacher assistance if required. Please encourage your child/children to attend Homework Club and use this valuable resource.
