Welcome to Term 3 at Wyndham Central!

As we embark on the second half of the school year, there's a renewed sense of energy and excitement throughout our community. This term promises a diverse array of activities, events, and learning opportunities designed to inspire and engage students of all year levels.

Firstly, I am thrilled to congratulate Wyndham Central College on winning the 2023 ACHPER Innovative Program Award – Secondary Winner. I was very honoured to accept this award  with Peta Hills on behalf of Wyndham Central College at the presentation ceremony. This esteemed award acknowledges excellence in health education, physical education, recreation. Open to all Victorian primary and secondary schools, the award celebrates programs that demonstrate outstanding innovation and originality, focusing on one or more of ACHPER's key areas.  This award is a testament to our school's commitment to excellence and innovation.

At our recent assembly, we proudly celebrated the achievements of our house teams. Congratulations to Yellow House for their outstanding performance in athletics, clinching the title of Athletics Champions!  Their dedication and teamwork truly shone through.

We also celebrated  Blue House for their exceptional efforts in cross country, earning them the Cross Country Winners' title. Both houses demonstrated incredible spirit and perseverance, embodying the true essence of competition and sportsmanship. Well done to all our athletes for their hard work and commitment!

A highlight of this term is the eagerly awaited '2024 Wyndham Central Come and Try Olympics,' taking place from August 5th to August 9th. This unique event will unite students in a celebration of fun and friendly competition, with activities such as Volleyball, Plane Making, Bean Bag Shot Put, Table Tennis Flip Flop, and Basketball Free Throw. Let's gear up for a term brimming with enthusiasm, creativity, and community spirit! And I look forward to updating you about this event in our next newsletter.

This term, our afterschool programs are offering an exciting lineup of activities to engage and enrich our students' experiences beyond the classroom. We're delighted to reintroduce cooking classes with Simon, a culinary student at Victoria University, where participants can explore their culinary creativity and learn essential skills for preparing delicious, healthy meals. For those with a passion for sports, we have volleyball sessions and soccer sessions run by Reclink, providing opportunities to develop teamwork, fitness, and athletic prowess. These afterschool programs are designed to cater to a variety of interests and help our students discover new talents while having fun and staying active. Again, I look forward to showing the photos from the programs next newsletter and please see Ms Sandlant if you would like to join!

All Abilities Sporting Day

This inclusive event was designed to ensure that every student, regardless of their abilities, has the chance to participate in and enjoy a range of sports and activities. From adaptive games to traditional sports, the day was filled with fun, camaraderie, and mutual respect.

The Wyndham Variety Abilities Unleashed Kids event took place at Eagle Stadium, the first time this size event has taken place in Victoria. Sports activities included Soccer, Netball, Walking Football, Group Fitness, Bowls, Karate, Circus Fit, Breakdancing and Basketball. The schedule featured multiple sport sessions, a recess break, and a main break.

To say the students had a good time would be an understatement!  Unfortunately I can't share the photos from the session. To see some students who traditionally don’t like sport, give it a go, and mix with other kids from other schools was AMAZING!

Brianna said “I had so much fun and kept me active. We should do this all the time”

Matthew said” I really enjoyed the bean bag shot put”

Josh said “I liked it very much”

The students also got a “show bag” with lots of goodies they were so happy to get.

Thanks to Luigi and Begum for their support on the excursion, I think they had as much fun as the kids did! Thanks to Marcia and Natasha in their help prior to the day as well.

Please find below the Clubs and Association details for the contact people for these sports.

Yr 11 Work Related Skills Presentation

The Year 11 VM Class had the privilege of welcoming guest presenter

Thea Debler-Depold, our school's lawyer, for an insightful session on workplace rights and entitlements. Thea engaged the students with a comprehensive overview of their rights and responsibilities in the workplace, covering important topics such as fair wages, working conditions, and the legal protections available to young workers. The presentation was interactive, with students having the opportunity to ask questions and discuss real-life scenarios. This informative session aimed to equip students with the knowledge and confidence they need as they enter the workforce, ensuring they are aware of their rights and how to advocate for themselves in various employment situations. Thank you Thea for coming in and presenting to our students.

Reclink

Sofia Hla from 9E thoroughly enjoyed the recent Year 9 Mind, Body, Pedal Program. She shared with Ms Taylor that she "wished" she could have a bike of her own. This information was passed along to me, and I reached out to Reclink, who generously provided her with her very own bike.

A massive thanks to Reclink who are big supporters of the school, this is such a great outcome for Sofia who explained to me she will be able to get around to more places now, and it’s just like she would see other people do in her “old country do", and now she can do herself.

Here is a picture of Sofia with her new bike.
