Learning in Year 2 - Weeks 7 & 8

English

Phonics

Week 7: Students will revise and consolidate the Stage 7.5 phonics sounds and spelling patterns taught so far. Through reading, writing, spelling, and word study activities, students will continue building confidence in recognising and applying these sounds in words.

Week 8: Students will begin exploring morphology through the suffix -ous. They will learn how adding -ous changes a word and helps describe someone or something, while building vocabulary and spelling knowledge.

Text Study  Fantastic Mr Fox Novel study

Students will participate in a novel study of Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl, exploring Chapters 1–9. They will investigate the character traits and actions of Mr Fox and the three farmers, and discuss why characters behave the way they do. Students will also share and justify their opinions about whether they agree with Mr Fox’s actions.

Throughout the unit, students will explore the main problem in the story while building comprehension skills such as predicting, inferring, and expressing opinions using evidence from the text.

Mathematics - Multiplication

Students will continue developing their understanding of arrays by using them to solve maths problems. They will create and draw arrays using rows and columns, practise efficient strategies such as skip counting and repeated addition to find totals, and explain how their arrays connect to both addition and multiplication number sentences. Through hands-on games and partner activities, students will build confidence in solving multiplication problems and sharing their mathematical thinking.

Inquiry

Students will continue exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through an investigation of traditional toys and games. Students will learn about how natural materials such as bark, grass, and feathers were used to create toys and compare these to toys and games played today.

Students will also explore traditional Aboriginal games including marngrook, weet-weet and gorri, while discussing the purpose of these games and how they helped build important skills within communities.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Students will continue developing their social and emotional skills through discussions, role-plays, and problem-solving activities. In Week 7, students will explore how to solve problems in fair and respectful ways using different social scenarios.

In Week 8, students will explore identity and individuality by discussing how people can enjoy different activities and interests. Students will learn that our interests, strengths, and choices help make us unique, and that we respect everyone’s interests and differences.
