Dandenong Market Excursion

Our Year 6 students recently enjoyed an exciting excursion to the iconic Dandenong Market as part of their preparation for our upcoming Market Day. Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the market, experiencing the sights, sounds and flavours that make the market such a unique community hub.

Students explored a wide variety of stalls and cuisines for lunch, with many eagerly stepping outside of their comfort zones to try foods from different cultures and backgrounds. The Bazaar section was a highlight for many students, where they explored the colourful stalls and even practised their negotiation skills, with several students successfully bartering to secure some fantastic deals on their purchases!

The excursion also provided students with the opportunity to explore the fruit and vegetable section, as well as the Meat and Deli Hall, where they discovered a range of interesting and unusual foods. Students interacted respectfully with stall holders throughout the day, asking questions and gaining valuable insight into what makes a successful market stall and business.

The excursion provided a wonderful real-world learning experience as students continue planning and preparing for their own Market Day stalls. Teachers were incredibly proud of the way our Year 6 students represented our school community, consistently demonstrating our school values of Kindness, Respect and Resilience throughout the excursion. It was wonderful to see students engaging positively with the wider community and embracing new experiences with enthusiasm and maturity.

Kindness Award

At Hillsmeade, our school values of Kindness, Respect and Resilience underpin everything we do. These values help guide our decisions, interactions and behaviours each day, and staff consistently work alongside students to positively redirect and encourage them to reflect on how they can demonstrate these values within our school community.

In Year 6, one way we celebrate students who consistently demonstrate our values is through our weekly Kindness Award. What makes this award particularly special is that it is nominated by the students themselves. Students are encouraged to recognise and celebrate their peers who go “above and beyond” to show kindness towards others and contribute positively to making Hillsmeade such a supportive and welcoming place to be.

This week, Ms Buckeridge had the pleasure of presenting the Kindness Award, along with the highly sought after $5 canteen voucher, to Lucy. Lucy was nominated by her peers for her consistently caring and helpful nature. Students shared that Lucy is always willing to help others, no matter who needs support. In particular, her classmates recognised the kindness and maturity she demonstrates whenever the class has a replacement teacher, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported and have everything they need to teach the class effectively.

Well done, Lucy! Thank you for demonstrating the values that make our Hillsmeade community so special.
