Meet Mr Jack Andrews, one of our secondary teachers who joined our school community at the start of this year. After relocating from Victoria with his young family, he has quickly become a valued member of our teaching team. Jack brings a strong passion for senior schooling, drawing on his experience in girls' education, and he enjoys supporting students as they navigate their final years.

Welcome to St Mary's College! What drew you to join the SMC community, and what subjects do you teach?

After recently moving from Victoria to Tasmania, I knew I wanted to remain in girls' education. When I visited St Mary's College in early 2025, the school immediately felt warm, welcoming and homely – it felt 'right'. I'm teaching English, HaSS and Religious Education across the Senior School.

As you settle into your new role, what are you most looking forward to achieving in 2026?

I'm really looking forward to getting to know the students and becoming part of their six-year learning journey in the Senior School. My goal is to help create a classroom where curiosity thrives. I want my students to genuinely want to learn, feel confident asking questions and find real interest in the content we explore.

What guides your approach to teaching (whether that's your philosophy, values or what inspires you in the classroom)?

My teaching is guided by the belief that strong relationships are at the heart of every successful classroom. I’d describe myself as "firm but fair, but also fun", because joy and engagement matter – I want students to get excited about coming to our class, that’s the first step!

What experience or strengths do you bring to your teaching practice?

I see spontaneity and adaptability as real strengths. I’ve worked in a variety of educational settings over the years, and all of them have helped shape me to be the educator I am today.

Outside of school, what do you enjoy doing or what helps you recharge?

I recharge by being active and spending time with the people I love. I enjoy running, going on hikes and spending time with my wife and our two boys. Being outdoors together is something that really fills my cup and helps me reset.
