Term 1 Sport

What a fantastic start to the sporting year!

Our flippa ball and soccer teams enjoyed a wonderful season, with many new friendships formed and skills developed along the way.

A big thank you to all our coaches. Our teams simply wouldn’t be possible without your time and dedication. We also extend our thanks to families for supporting their children to represent our College and participate in the sporting rosters.

We were proud to enter a team in the Division One roster in each of the primary school basketball tournaments. All players represented the College with great sportsmanship and effort, and we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements.

2026 Year 3/4 Regional Primary School Basketball Tournament

Last weekend, our Year 3/4 team represented the College in the Division One competition at the regional basketball tournament.

While our team may have lacked height, they more than made up for it with tenacity and determination. Often competing against taller and stronger opponents, the team demonstrated resilience and never gave up, fighting hard until the final buzzer in every match. Their efforts resulted in two wins and two losses – an excellent achievement.

To ensure we had enough players to enter a team, we welcomed two guest players. A big thank you to Sadie Kean and Peaches Sullivan for joining our SMC team – both girls were fantastic additions.

Thank you also to Luke Brown for coaching the team. Under his guidance, every player had the opportunity to further develop their skills and understanding of the game.

Finals bound: First-grade tennis team dominates SSATIS

Our first-grade tennis team (pictured above) is heading to the state finals for the third consecutive year after a fantastic win over Fahan School in the recent SSATIS Grand Final. As defending champions, they will now face Launceston Church Grammar on Thursday 14 May in Launceston.

These students should be immensely proud of their efforts. Alongside their impressive skill, they bring fun, joy and genuine teamwork to every match. Congratulations and well done to Maria Kothris – Captain, Matilda Greenhill, Imogen Ransley and Ellie Richardson on a thoroughly deserved win, and best of luck to the whole team in the finals.

Our sincere thanks to Fahan School for an excellent contest, and to our wonderful community of teachers, parents and carers for their continued support.

Sailing team braves the elements at Tasmanian Schools Championships

Congratulations to the St Mary's College/Guilford Young College sailing team, who braved challenging conditions and demonstrated outstanding skill, determination and teamwork at the recent Tasmanian Schools Championships. Match racing is quite different from the team's usual fleet racing and takes time to master, yet they rose to the challenge with enthusiasm.

Despite the inclement weather, the team enjoyed a successful day on the water, finishing eighth out of 12. By the end of the event, they were executing tactical manoeuvres with the confidence and precision of the top teams.

Thank you to everyone involved in organising and supporting the program, and to the parents and carers for their ongoing encouragement, management and coaching.

Shout out to Year 8 Blue volleyball

Congratulations to the Year 8 Blue volleyball team, who played their semi‑final against Sacred Heart 7/8 Blue and their runner‑up final against Dominic last night at Sacred Heart College.

The SMC team finished an impressive fourth out of 24 teams – a fantastic achievement and a testament to their hard work and teamwork throughout the season.

Well done to all players, and a special thank‑you to team manager Kalli Webb for supporting the group across the roster.
