Spring is a great time to start new habits
As the weather warms up, we can look for fresh approaches and new beginnings. Our reading program runs throughout the year, encouraging students to sample new authors and genres and to reflect on what they are reading. We want students to develop the confidence and skills to find stories that interest and engage them, and to see reading as a hobby they can enjoy throughout their lives.
As young people grow, they benefit from seeing the adults in their lives read for pleasure, information, and learning. Making reading a visible and valued part of family life is one of the most effective ways parents can support their child's reading habits. Here are some suggestions:
1. Read every day - Teenagers notice what adults do. Let them see you reading a novel, newspaper, magazine, recipe book, or online article. Even 10 minutes of visible reading sends a powerful message that reading is worthwhile and enjoyable.
2. Find the time - Reading doesn't have to happen in long, leisurely stretches. Listen to an audiobook in the car, pull out a book instead of a phone while waiting for an appointment, or read a chapter before bed each night.
3. Sample a new book - Not every story will be the right fit. It's okay to read a chapter or two and then decide whether to continue. Abandoning a book that isn't engaging can help readers discover one that is.
4. Try a reading party - Pause screens for 30 minutes and read together. Prepare some snacks and drinks and enjoy a shared reading session. As the weather warms up, a picnic blanket in the sunshine can make this a particularly enjoyable family activity.
5. Talk about what you're reading - This doesn't need to be long or academic. Share an interesting idea, a surprising fact, or an unexpected plot twist from something you've read recently. Casual conversations about reading can be highly effective in encouraging and modelling positive reading habits.
Happy Reading!
