Prep - Year 2 Updates

Prep

Last week, the Prep students celebrated ‘100 Days of School’. It was wonderful to see the posters they made with their families and to watch them take part in lots of fun activities with their friends and buddies.

The students are continuing to actively engage with our Little Learners Love Literacy program and are now moving onto Stage Plus 4 where they are learning the common double consonants ll,ff,ss,zz. Students are also learning about the suffixes -s and -es. During tasks they will continue to develop their ability to read and spell CVCC, CCVC, CCVCC words.

During Mathematics, the students have been engaging in practical situations that involve addition and subtraction. They will continue to build their confidence and fluency in this area throughout the rest of this term.

During Religion, the students have been learning about the first Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus’ disciples. They were able to make connections with this story to their Year 6 Buddies making their Sacrament of Confirmation.

Year 1

This term, the Year 1 students are exploring narrative writing. The students have enjoyed exploring the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, looking closely at the setting and characters of the story. We have completed activities exploring describing words to build our vocabulary and to help us to write our own stories later this term. In Mathematics, we have continued with the topic of addition and subtraction. The students have enjoyed learning about fact families that link addition and subtraction together, e.g. 2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-2=3 and 5-3=2. We also learnt about the commutative feature of addition, where you can reverse the two addends to give you the same total answer, e.g. 5 plus 4 equals 9, so 4 plus 5 also equals 9. The students have also engaged in learning about cyber safety and digital wellbeing through the Inform & Empower online incursions. So far, we have learnt about what the internet is, balancing screen time with green time and the importance of not sharing our personal information online. The students have thoroughly enjoyed engaging in these sessions and have participated in some great discussions about these importanttopics.

Year 2

Over the past fortnight, Year 2 has been continuing our work in Multiplication and Division, focusing on groups of and sharing. Students have been learning to use arrays to organise equal groups. In Little Learners, we have been revising previously taught silent letters and exploring the /j/ sound made by dge, ge, gi and gy. When working with silent letters, students practised using a ‘spell voice’ to help remember tricky spellings. For example, when spelling rhino, we can say r‑hino to remember the silent letter. During Inquiry, we have begun our Physical Science unit on forces. Students explored the concepts of push and pull and used play doh to investigate how these forces help us shape and create objects, including making their own turtles. In Religion, we have been learning about special people in the Parish and the ways they contribute to helping others. Students also reflected on the idea that they each have their own special gifts and discussed how they can use these gifts to help people in their families, class and wider community.
