Year 11 Construction Students Experience Live CBD Building Project

Last Thursday, 6 August, 22 Year11 Certificate II in Construction Pathways students had the unique opportunity to visit Hutchinson Builders' live construction site at 50 Quay Street, Brisbane, gaining valuable insight into the scale and complexity of a major residential construction project.

A special thank you goes to Michelle Buckland, Pathways Engagement Lead, for organising this outstanding industry experience. Excursions such as these provide students with authentic exposure to the construction industry and the many pathways available beyond school.

The tour was expertly led by Project Manager Anthony Stevens, who guided students through the building's impressive 30 levels. With construction entering its final stages ahead of its scheduled completion in October, students were able to observe first-hand the coordination, planning, and craftsmanship required to deliver a project of this magnitude.

Throughout the visit, students were highly engaged as they explored the site and discovered the vast number of trades and professions that contribute to the successful completion of a high-rise residential development. From carpentry and concreting through to project management, contract administration, and specialist trades, the excursion highlighted the diverse career opportunities available within the construction industry.

Adding a special connection to the experience were two College Old Boys currently forging successful careers with Hutchinson Builders. Bailey Caplick, who was recognised as Apprentice of the Year for his Carpentry apprenticeship last year, shared his journey from school to industry and the rewards of pursuing a trade career. Students were also accompanied by George Collyer, a Cadet Contract Administrator, who generously fielded questions throughout the tour and provided valuable insights into the professional and administrative aspects of large-scale construction projects.

It was particularly inspiring for students to see these former graduates thriving through different pathways within the same organisation. Their experiences demonstrated that whether entering through an apprenticeship or a cadetship, there are many avenues that can lead to fulfilling and successful careers in the construction industry.

The excursion was an outstanding learning opportunity and a memorable experience for all involved. We thank Hutchinson Builders, Anthony Stevens, Bailey Caplick, George Collyer, and Michelle Buckland for their generosity and commitment to supporting the next generation of industry professionals. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Hutchinson Builders and welcoming Old Boys Bailey, George, and Pedro Hoffman back to the College later this year to share their career journeys with our Year 10 Construction Gateway students, inspiring them to explore the many exciting opportunities available in the construction industry.
