Sport News

Round 3 saw us hosting St Patrick’s College, which always proves to be a competitive day of sport through the years, divisions and sports. We thank Pats for their sportsmanship and shared commitment to quality sporting experiences. This for me is the true essence of schoolboy sport, tough, intense, competitive sport, played in a positive spirit and genuine rivalry and competition.

First IV Tennis competed strongly against a tough Pats team, finishing the day with a hard-fought 4–4 draw. Unfortunately, the team went down narrowly on games, 48–58, but can be proud of their competitive effort throughout the afternoon. 

First XIII Rugby League continued their strong form with another impressive victory, defeating Pats 36–12. The team showed great energy and determination to control the game and secure another well-deserved win.

First V Basketball continued their winning streak with a strong 82–63 victory over Pats. The boys produced an impressive performance from start to finish, demonstrating excellent teamwork and composure to maintain their momentum. Their consistent performances continue to build confidence as they look to extend their winning run in the coming weeks.

Our Hockey team battled hard against St Edmund’s in an entertaining 5–5 draw. The boys currently sit on top of the table with just two games remaining before the final, putting themselves in a fantastic position heading into the final stages of the season. Congratulations to the boys on their continued commitment and effort throughout the season — we wish them all the best as they push towards a strong finish.

As we head into the much-needed Ekka break, it provides a valuable opportunity for our students, families and staff to rest, reset and recharge before returning for the second half of the AIC Term 3 season. We hope everyone enjoys the break, takes the opportunity to spend some quality time with family and friends, and returns refreshed and ready for the weeks ahead. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of Marist Sport, it is greatly appreciated. Met North Trials 

Students who are wanting to trial for the Met North 14-18 Boys Baseball team can complete the expression of interest form which can be found via the student notices. The EOI closes Monday 17 August at 3:00pm.

With St Pat's losing only by a few games to St Peters, we knew we were in for a tough battle. Our number one doubles took charge with Oscar and Tom playing some clinical tennis against their number 2 pairing, winning 6-2. Indy and Will had a shaky start going down 6-1. Assurances from both meant they went out with their heads held high and grinded a 6-4 win playing some tactical tennis, targeting Pat's number 3 who had weak volleys. Exuding confidence, Oscar and Tom dominated the net with some awesome volleys winning 6-4 against Pats number 1 pair.

Indy unfortunately played against an extremely tough opponent; however, it was great to see him fighting till the last point. In typical Oscar fashion, he played consistent tennis - toying with his opponent by running him side to side. Pats number 1 boiled over and Oscar ran away with the last 3 games to win and take Marist to a 4-2 lead. Tom went out and battled against his opponent, firing on his forehand but he was quickly figured out and eventually lost 6-1 in the second set. With us down on games it was up to the captain Will to bring us home. A tight first set loss meant the second set would be played in similar fashion. Will played great, attacking the net in impressive fashion and went up 5-3. Unfortunately, some double faults from Will but also some terrific shot making from the Pats 3 meant Will ended up losing 5-7 in that second set.

Tied 4-4, we went down 48-58 in games. This goes to show that you need to fight for every single point as you never know how close the score could be.

Great work from the boys in the doubles however, showcasing what they do in training translates to the game.

Wil Lambley - Tennis Captain

Returning home, we took on St Pats who guaranteed a long day of competition. After the first two doubles matches, we were split 1-1, with Oscar and Tom putting on a masterclass against the number 2 pairing.

Coming out strong, both pairings took an early lead in the second set of doubles, eventually going on take both matches in dominant fashion. This put us in a great position leading into the singles, up 3-1 for our first lead of the season.

Oscar showed everyone how it’s done, claiming a commanding win over their number 1. Indy faced another tough opponent, unfortunately going down quickly, despite maintaining fight. Tom suffered a similar fate, pushing his opponent all the way in the first set, before it slipped away in the second. With the score now sitting at 4-3, it came down to my match. A gruelling first set ended at 5-7, meaning that a win was now essential. Tense back and forth battles continued, but a strong comeback meant that St Pats would take that set 5-7 again. Despite the tie on matches, St Pats would leave with the win.

After a week break, we return to take on St Laurence’s, where we will fight to claim our first win of the season. Thank you again to those who came to support, it is much appreciated.

AIC

Round 3 of the AIC Tennis season saw our Marist teams take on St Peter's in another competitive round of matches. There were some excellent performances across the teams, with plenty of determination, close contests and strong results throughout the day.

Year 5 

The Year 5 team produced a strong performance against St Peter’s in Round 3, showing good consistency across both the doubles and singles matches. The boys were particularly impressive in their singles, with several convincing wins and plenty of positive tennis throughout the fixture. The team continued to compete hard across the afternoon and secured a well-deserved overall victory. It was a great opportunity for the boys to build confidence and continue developing their match play.

Year 6 

Both Year 6 teams were in fine form against SPLC, each coming away with 2-1 set wins. Harry was the standout, winning his singles to love, while Connor and Otis combined well in doubles, with all 3 of Otis, Connor and Edmund picking up singles wins.

Year 7 

The Year 7 team had one of the closest contests of the round, with the fixture finishing 4–4 in matches and 33–30 in games. The boys battled hard throughout, with several matches going right down to the wire. There were strong wins in both the singles and doubles, and the team showed plenty of resilience when faced with some very competitive St Peter’s opposition. While the final result went against Marist on games, the overall performance demonstrated just how closely matched the two sides were. It was a valuable experience for the boys and a great display of determination across the entire team.

Year 8 

The Year 8 team had an excellent Round 3 fixture, coming away with a 6–2 overall win against St Peter’s. The boys made a strong start in the doubles, with both opening partnerships securing wins, before continuing that momentum into the singles. There were some particularly impressive performances, including a closely fought 7–5 singles victory, as well as several convincing wins. The team showed good consistency and competitiveness throughout the fixture and thoroughly deserved their strong result.

Year 9

The Year 9s had a strong round against St Pats. The first team won 5 sets to 3 (33-23 on games), with Hunter and Seve dominant across both doubles and singles. The second Year 9 team produced the result of the day, winning 6 sets to 1 and 40-18 on games. Frankie was untouchable throughout, while Harry ground out a gusty 7-6 tiebreak win in singles to headline a near-perfect team performance.

1st IV produced a genuinely even contest against St Pats, drawing 4 sets all before ultimately going down on games count, 49–58. Oscar was outstanding, winning both his doubles rubbers alongside Tom as well as a strong two-set singles victory, while Will fought hard in a tight singles battle that went 5–7, 5–7.

The 2nd IV also drew 4 sets all, with the match finishing dead level on games, 28–28. Ryan was the pick of the side, combining with Isaac for a doubles win before backing it up with a strong singles victory, while Toby and Hugh added a comfortable doubles win of their own.

The 3rd IV had a difficult morning against a strong St Pats outfit, unable to find a way into the contest across the card. The boys will look to regroup and take confidence from the tighter performances elsewhere in the club this week.

Round 3 was another positive outing for Marist Tennis, with strong results across the Year 5, Year 7 and Year 8 teams. There were some convincing wins alongside several extremely close contests, giving our players plenty of opportunities to test themselves in competitive match situations. The continued improvement in confidence, consistency and competitiveness across the teams is encouraging as we move further into the AIC season.

Basketball

Mr Jonte Brown - Basketball Coordinator

Marist Basketball teams enjoyed another strong Round 3, recording 18 wins and 12 losses in a competitive weekend against St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe and Iona College.

Our Senior teams led the way with some excellent performances again, including impressive victories for the 1st V (82–63), 2nd V (73–36) and 3rd V (65–50). The 4th V fought hard in a close contest, going down 35–37. The 11B also secured a strong 29–16 victory, while across the middle year levels, the 10A, 10B, 9B, 9C, 9D, 8B, 8C, 8D, 7C and 7D teams all produced excellent results.

The Year 5 and Year 6 teams continued to show great enthusiasm and determination, with wins to 5D, 6B, 6C and 6D. All teams represented Marist with great spirit, competing strongly and demonstrating teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the weekend.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, and families for their continued commitment and support. The positive attitude and Marist spirit displayed across the courts continues to be a highlight of our basketball program. We look forward to another exciting round of competition.

EKKA Week Bye Round

With EKKA Week taking place this week, there will be no basketball games this weekend, giving our players and families a well-earned break from competition. Please note that there will also be some changes to the regular training schedule throughout the week. Families are encouraged to check the updated training times and locations to ensure they are aware of any changes as most teams will not be training. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable EKKA break and look forward to returning to the courts next weekend!

Mr James Lymer - 1st V Basketball Coach

Another fantastic result for the Marist Basketball Program, with the 1st V claiming their third consecutive victory after defeating a hungry St Patrick's side, 82 – 63. With their speed, physicality, and ability to score in transition, we knew Pat's would present a significant challenge. I was particularly impressed with how the group controlled the tempo of the game, finished possessions at both ends of the floor, remained disciplined defensively, and generated quality scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

After three rounds of competition, the win sees Marist sitting at the top of the AIC ladder. While it has been a promising start to the season, the team remains grounded and understands there is still plenty of work to be done heading into the Ekka break.

Attention now turns to a blockbuster Round 4 clash against the competition's other undefeated side, St Laurence's. With first place on the line, it promises to be our biggest test of the season so far. The group is eager to embrace the challenge and secure an important road victory.

We hope to see all members of the Marist community getting behind the team again at Laurie’s courts on Saturday, 22 August, with tip-off at 12:15pm.

Hockey

Last Wednesday, our hockey team faced St Edmund's College in a highly anticipated grand final rematch from last year. As has become customary whenever these two sides meet, the game delivered quality hockey from start to finish with the final score being a 5-5 draw. Any game featuring ten goals is bound to keep spectators on the edge of their seats, and this encounter certainly did not disappoint. Looking back, while emotions were running high during the match itself, it was an outstanding display of hockey from both teams and a reminder of the quality that exists within our competition.

One of the most exciting moments of the game came when we scored two goals in the space of a minute. The quick-fire double demonstrated just how dangerous we can be when everything clicks into place.

There were several standout individual performances. Congratulations to Luke Keir fresh from Nationals, who produced a superb hat-trick to lead our attack. Matt Alvarez was relentless throughout the match and was rewarded with a well-deserved goal, while Fletcher Wessling also found the back of the net. In goals, Blake delivered an outstanding performance, making a number of crucial saves against a strong and determined St Edmund's side.

While there were plenty of positives to take from the match, there are also important lessons to be learned. With the EKKA week break now upon us, the team will have the opportunity to rest, reset, and reflect. Our next fixture will once again be against Padua.

Well done to all players on a fantastic effort in one of the most entertaining matches of the season so far.

Congratulations to all of the Marist students for their outstanding performances at the Districts Track and Field Carnival. It was an incredible two days of exceptional performances, particularly this early in the season.

Safety Notice | Hayden Oval

Attention all students / parents / visitors. 

Track and Field training (discus, shot put and javelin) has commenced on Hayden Oval for Term 3. 

At any time you are walking across Hayden Oval or wanting to enter the tennis courts area, please adhere to the following safety guidelines: Look for Bunting, Signs, and Witches Hats: These markers are placed to indicate restricted areas.

Safe Route: To move between the bus stop and tennis courts, please use the road up to the new primary building and the stairs closest to the tennis shed. Please do not walk across Hayden Oval. 

Your cooperation is essential in ensuring everyone's safety during training sessions. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Marist Track and Field | Sign On

Please go to Parent Orbit and see information regarding sign on. All students who wish to be involved in the Track and Field program are asked to sign up via the student café. Once your son/s have signed up all parents or caregivers MUST approve the signup via Parent Lounge and edit or update any medical details. 

This assists the College in organising the appropriate number of coaching staff and to deliver the necessary resources.

NOTE – If your son isn’t registered, you will NOT receive any information via the Parent Orbit regarding the Track and Field program, including schedules and relevant information.

Marist Track and Field | Camp (SAVE THE DATE)

The Track and Field Camp is a vital component of the team’s preparation for the AIC Championship. Over 2½ days, students will receive high-level coaching and mentoring from an exceptional team of specialists including National and Olympic-level coaches across various track and field disciplines.

Attendance at the camp is by invitation only and invitations will be sent to selected students in late August. Selection is based on a range of factors, including performance, attitude, attendance and team composition.

This camp provides an outstanding opportunity for students to refine their skills, build team camaraderie, and gain valuable insights from elite-level coaches as we prepare to defend both our AIC Secondary and AIC Primary Championship trophies.

NOTE – a small group of Year 6 students will be invited to attend the Friday session at UQ. This group will be made aware closer to the time.

For those students wanting to get a head start or start the season strongly, Mr Rob Martin will continue to run his usual Sunday sessions. Mr Martin has had exceptionally strong numbers attend the sessions as students prepare for up-coming Inter-House Carnival and AIC season. The Sunday sessions are an excellent introduction. We have some exceptional coaches leading these sessions, and creating an environment of learning and enjoyment. Some benefits include -

1. Improvement in technique and speed.

2. Technical development for throws.

3. Improved repeat speed / conditioning.

Round 3 - Team Of The Week 

1st XIII Match Report  

The 1st XIII faced another tough challenge this week against St Patrick’s, with a focus on limiting penalties, being patient with the football and building pressure through our sets. 

The boys produced a solid first half, crossing for three tries while conceding just once to take a 12–6 lead into the break. While there were opportunities to be more clinical, the effort and intent were strong. 

The second half was a much more composed performance. We kicked well into the corners, backed our defence and played smart football when in possession. A few errors from kick-offs handed St Patrick’s some good field position, but the boys showed plenty of resilience defending their try line and continued to work hard for one another. 

Jed Cole was named Man of the Match after controlling the game through his strong communication and kicking game. James Johnston led from the front through the middle, while Finn Manahan was a constant threat out of dummy half.

Marist Rugby Union | Club Coach Success 

Congratulations to three Marist staff members for their success to date in the Brisbane senior club competition. 

Mr Dan Ritchie (Norths Premier Grade / Marist 10A), Mr Doug Perrers (UQ Colts 2 / Marist 7A) and Mr Tom Dangerfield (GPS Colts 2 / Marist 8A) are all involved in the first round of finals this weekend.

For Mr Ritchie and the Norths Rugby Union Club, this is a fantastic turnaround built on thorough planning, attention to detail and hard work. We wish him well this weekend in his game against Brothers.

In a friendly and professional rivalry, Mr Perrers and Mr Dangerfield’s teams compete against each other this weekend for an opportunity to progress through to another week in the finals. In a further twist, both Mr Perrers and Mr Dangerfield sit only three desks from each other in the Gubbins Staff Room.
