Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers
In Years 5/6, students are settling well into Term 2 and are demonstrating the 7 Habits while continuing to develop strong leadership qualities. Some highlights so far include weekly Interschool Sports matches, where our young athletes are achieving excellent results; the District Cross Country event; and Junior Mayor, where our school captains and vice-captains represented the school with confidence and pride.
Learning Focuses
Literacy - Biographies'
In Literacy, students have continued exploring biographies. Students have read and analysed biographies about Steve Irwin, David Attenborough, and Jane Goodall; three influential environmental figures. As part of their weekly homework, students have interviewed a family member of choice and, each week, are practising a new biography-writing skill, such as writing an informative and eye-catching introduction, developing body paragraphs, and writing a strong conclusion to summarise. We look forward to seeing what students create as they continue to develop their skills as biographical writers!
Mathematics - 3D Objects and Decimals'
In Mathematics, Year 5 students have begun investigating 3D objects and their features. Students have learnt that nets are 2D shapes that when folded together, create the faces of a 3D object. Students have also designed their own net ‘package’ to contain a product like foods, clothes and household items.
In Year 6 Mathematics, students have been exploring decimals, including strategies for adding and subtracting decimal numbers.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, as part of our Animals Adaptations and Habitats unit, the students have explored food webs and how animals interact with each other as predator and prey. They are developing an understanding of how energy flows through ecosystems and how living things depend on one another for survival. The students are looking forward to their visit to the Melbourne Zoo in Week 5, where they will have the opportunity to apply their learning in a real-world setting by observing a range of animals and exploring the habitats they live in.
