Year 2 News

Welcome back to another exciting week in Year 2!
As members of the Catholic Community, we have continued to learn about Mary and her important role in our faith. We listened to the Scripture story The Wedding at Cana and discussed the different people present in the story, including Mary, Jesus and the wedding guests. We then used the thinking routine Step Inside, where we imagined ourselves as one of the people in the story and considered what they might be thinking, feeling and experiencing. This helped us to look at the story from different perspectives, deepen our understanding of the characters and reflect on Mary’s faith, compassion and trust in Jesus.
As inquirers, we have begun our new unit of inquiry into St Fidelis’ history and started off with a very exciting provocation in the newly renovated chapel. Working with our friends in Foundation and Year 1, we had the chance to explore a range of fascinating artefacts from our school’s past, including old photographs, learning materials, classroom resources and other interesting items that gave us a glimpse into what school life was like many years ago. Together, we shared our wonderings, asked thoughtful questions and made connections between the past and our experiences at school today. We even spotted a few parents and teachers in the pictures!
As mathematicians, we have been learning about 3D objects and exploring their different properties, including faces, vertices, edges and surfaces. We practised naming, describing and sorting 3D objects based on their properties, using our mathematical vocabulary to explain our thinking and identify similarities and differences between different objects. We loved listening to the song, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74JhwbsVXQ8 to help us learn about 3D objects, although we weren’t so sure about one thing! We noticed that the song called them 3D shapes, and we were quick to point out that 3D objects are not the same as 2D shapes! We are becoming confident mathematicians who think carefully about the language we use and can explain our mathematical understanding. In 2SH, we also created 3D cityscapes and used our mathematical language to explain what we had created.
Well done to 2NA for their excellent assembly on Friday! We were so proud to see the students confidently sharing their learning about empathy and the importance of considering how others might be feeling. They reminded us that we can show empathy by listening carefully to others, being kind and fair when playing games, and making thoughtful choices that consider the feelings of those around us. A fantastic effort, 2NA, for sharing such an important message with our school community!
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Data
- Literacy: Narratives
- Spelling: The digraph /wr/ as in wrist.
- Inquiry: St Fidelis - 100 years
- Religion: Mary
TRP: Emotional literacy
Have a great week!
