Primary - Future Leaders Take the Floor at Parliament House

On the 23rd of June, six of our selected students had the privilege of representing our school at the Victorian Students’ Parliamentary Convention, held at the Parliament of Victoria.

This event provided a unique opportunity for the students to deeply consider contemporary social and legal issues, directly linking to the Civics and Citizenship curriculum. This year, the convention tackled a highly relevant and pressing political question today;  "Should children who work at major Australian sporting events, such as the Australian Open, be paid for their work?"

Our students worked diligently in the lead-up to the event to prepare a formal opening statement. Stepping into the grandeur of the Legislative Assembly, they confidently presented their arguments to 11 other Victorian schools, the Speaker of the House, and a panel of distinguished guests including;

• The Victorian Shadow Minister for Education
• The Director of Victorian Sports and Community Engagement
• An employment relations lawyer

• A policy officer from Participation and Sector Development

   

Beyond presenting, our students heard from engaging keynote speakers and threw themselves into lively, collaborative discussions with peers from various government and non-government schools across the state. To wrap up the day, the students participated in an authentic simulation of a parliamentary vote, and shared their individual rebuttals and collective reasoning. It was a long but extremely enjoyable and invaluable experience.

Our students represented our school with immense maturity, critical thinking, and articulate public speaking. We commend them on their excellent contributions to this civic conversation.
