Growing In Compassion Part 1: For Ourselves and for Others

At the heart of our Free to Flourish dispositions is the beautiful and challenging disposition of compassion, and this past month, our school community has embodied it in the most extraordinary ways.
We believe compassion is not simply a virtue we strive toward through our own effort. It flows from something deeper, from knowing that we are each already loved, forgiven, and held by grace. It is precisely because we are so unconditionally loved by God that we are freed to love others without reservation, without keeping score.
This is also the foundation of self-compassion. When we understand that our identity and value are rooted not in our achievements or our perfection, but in God's grace alone, we are released from the burden of harsh self-judgement. We can acknowledge our mistakes honestly, make amends, and move forward, not because we have earned another chance, but because grace is always already there. This is the gift we hope our students carry with them always, and the posture we invite our families to model at home.
June: A Month of Compassion in Action
Our Year 2 and Year 4 students opened their hearts to our broader community; Year 2s visiting Millhaven and Year 4s welcoming their special people to school. Sharing the joy of learning with others is one of the most natural expressions of service: using our gifts not for ourselves alone, but for the flourishing of those around us.
Our Prep students visited the Museum of Art and Play and have since been busy designing spaces that welcome everyone in our community. Their thoughtfulness and ingenuity in creating places where others feel seen and valued is truly awe-inspiring, a beautiful picture of neighbour-love made visible.
Our Year 1 students explored compassion and stewardship together, learning about the needs of our local wildlife and the important role we all play in caring for our wondrous world. Their curiosity and sense of responsibility toward the creatures and environment around them was a joy to witness, a reminder that compassion extends beyond people to all living things.
Our Year 3 students have been busy writing explanation texts and exploring Dreamtime and cultural stories that seek to explain the how and why of some of the most significant and wondrous parts of our world. Honouring the stories and perspectives of others is itself an act of compassion, and our students are growing in that understanding beautifully.
Our Year 5 students spearheaded our compassion exploration with our annual Walk My Way experience, raising awareness for ALWS and advocating for the rights of refugees and those less fortunate. ALWS, the Australian Lutheran World Service, is a wonderful expression of our calling to stand alongside the most vulnerable, and our Year 5s carried that mission with courage and conviction.
Our Year 6 students continue to be remarkable servant-leaders. A group of six was invited to State Parliament to share their voice and perspective with our state leaders, a powerful reminder that compassion finds its fullest expression when we are willing to speak up for others and engage courageously in the world around us.
Our students also showcased their musical talents at the Soiree and have been working hard toward our upcoming production. Add to this our wonderful German Afternoon Tea and Lantern Festival, a joyful nod to our Lutheran heritage, the Lightning Premierships, District Representation, Art Incursions, and the impressive coding taking place in our digital technologies space.
It has been a full, rich, and grace-filled month!
