Growing In Compassion Part 2: Nurturing Self-Compassion at Home

As we celebrate all that our students have given to others this month, I want to gently encourage our families to reflect on self-compassion, not as a passing trend or quick fix, but as something far more profound: a recognition that we are each inherently worthy of the same kindness and grace we so readily offer to others.

At the heart of our school community is this belief: that every child is inherently worthy of love and belonging, not because of what they achieve or how they perform, but simply because of who they are. Our children thrive when they truly believe this, when they know that a mistake does not define them, that falling short does not diminish their worth, and that they can always begin again.

Children learn how to treat themselves by watching the adults around them. When we speak kindly about our own mistakes, model bouncing back from difficulty without excessive self-criticism, and accept our own imperfections with grace, we give our children permission to do the same. We point them, gently, toward the same grace that holds us all.

Self-compassion is not about lowering expectations. It is about recognising that growth is a process, that setbacks are part of the journey, and that we are worthy of care, not because we have earned it, but because we are beloved.

Our Behaviour Expectations This Month

Our community expectations this month have focused on:

  • I keep my hands, feet and objects to myself
  • I take responsibility for my actions
  • I accept the decisions of adults
  • I can bounce back from issues

These expectations connect beautifully to our compassion theme. Taking responsibility, accepting guidance, and bouncing back from difficulty are all marks of a compassionate and resilient character. They remind us that we are accountable to one another, and that restoration is always possible. We encourage you to revisit these at home and celebrate the moments when you see your child living them out.

Important Reminders

Semester Reports: We are excited to share that our reimagined semester reports are due to be released this Friday. We have overhauled our reporting cycle and feedback loop to ensure greater transparency and a stronger connection between home and school. Early next term, we will be sending out a survey to gather your feedback, as we are always seeking to improve our practices in support of our learners.

Premier's Reading Challenge: Please continue to encourage your child to participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge. Every book read is a step toward building a lifelong love of learning.

PTFA: A heartfelt thank you also to our wonderful PTFA, whose tireless dedication and generosity enrich the life of our school in countless ways. We are so grateful for everything they do for our children and community.

Thank you to all of our families for the continued partnership, trust, and love you bring to our school community. The compassion we see in our students every day is a reflection of what you nurture at home, and it is a beautiful thing to witness. Together, we are raising extraordinary young people who know they are valued, that they are enough, and that they have so much to give to this world.

We wish you all a wonderful term break, enjoy the rest, the reconnection, and the joy of time together. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3.
