OutLoud : Poetry Slam Finals

Performing at the Wheeler Centre

On Monday, 26th August, the Year 8 students who came first, second and third in the Term 2 Poetry Slam - Charlotte Harries, Eve Merory, Tepa Mulemba-Bastian, April Emmett and Freya Griffiths - went to the Wheeler Centre in the city to compete in the Regional Poetry Slam with students from other schools. The competition featured students from years 7-9. Everyone did extremely well, including the other talented competitors. The event was hosted by Emilie Zoey-Baker, who had been mentoring our contestants leading up to the competition. It also featured guest judge and successful author Andy Griffiths.

All the competitors were fantastic, and we extend an extra congratulations to Eve, who won a special commendation award for her poem. Some highlights were also the mini contests in between each poem performance, in which we came up with a definition and rhyming couplets for modern slang, such as “is it to be or not to be? The only answer: skibidi.”

The event lasted all day and was a lot of fun for everyone involved, however it was also extremely nerve-wracking being onstage! Nevertheless, everyone handled the pressure extremely well. At the end, we got to take a photo with all of the other poets on the stage. A very big thanks to Ms Kardamis and Ms Balis for taking us there and back.
