HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT – LEARNING IN ACTION

It has been a busy and engaging time in Health and Human Development, with students across our different year levels applying their learning in a variety of ways.

EGG BABIES

Our Year 10 Health students have been learning about parenting, relationships and the responsibilities involved in caring for a child. As part of this learning, students took on the Egg Baby Challenge, where they were responsible for caring for their own 'baby' over several days.

Students had to keep their egg baby safe, organise care around their everyday commitments and experience some of the responsibility that comes with caring for another person. There were plenty of creative names and carefully designed carriers, with students gaining a greater appreciation of the commitment involved in parenting.

REAL CARE BABIES

Our Year 11 Health and Human Development students took their learning one step further with the Real Care Baby Experience. These realistic infant simulators required students to respond to their baby's needs, including feeding, changing, burping and settling – sometimes at some very inconvenient hours!

The experience allowed students to connect their classroom learning about parenting, development, health and wellbeing with a realistic parenting experience. It also encouraged some great reflection about the responsibilities of parenting and the importance of support networks.

YEAR 12 – THE FINAL STRETCH

Our Year 12 Health and Human Development students are reaching an important milestone as they finish their final Area of Study for Unit 4.

With their coursework nearing completion, attention is now turning towards VCE exam preparation. Students will begin consolidating content from Units 3 and 4, revisiting key knowledge and terminology practising examination-style questions and developing strategies for responding effectively to different question types.

After a big year of learning, our Year 12 students should be proud of reaching this point in their HHD journey.

As the SJC H&HD students say, ‘Hard work pays off!’

It has been fantastic to see students across all year levels engaging with Health and Human Development and making connections between what they learn in the classroom and real-life health, wellbeing and development.

ROAD SMART

Year 10 Health students participated in the Road Smart Interactive program during Week 8. This innovative experience was designed by road safety experts and education specialists and features elements adapted from the award-winning Road to Zero Experience at Melbourne Museum.

Guided by road safety facilitators, students worked through six interactive digital experiences, each exploring a different area of road safety. Students explored speed, crash forces, safe vehicles, road conditions, driver behaviour and distractions. This program encourages students to make safe decisions and understand how their choices can impact themselves and others.

The program encouraged students to think critically about how they and their peers can help make everyone safer on our roads.
