Maths Talent Quest

We're excited to announce that Essex Heights will be participating in the Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) for the first time this year! Run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria, the MTQ is an optional extension opportunity that encourages students to think and work like mathematicians — developing a question, collecting and analysing data, and communicating their findings. All students from Foundation (Prep) to 6 are invited to participate.

How parents can help:  Parents can guide and prompt their child along the way. Talking about maths together is a great way to build curiosity and confidence. The only thing to keep in mind is to let your child take the lead, so what's submitted is still recognisably their own work.

Stage 1 only:  As this is our first year, and given our timeline, Essex Heights will only be entering Stage 1 (the school-based investigation) this year. We won't be submitting projects on to MAV's broader competition this year.

Who can take part?

Participation is entirely optional and open to all students. Students can work:

  • Individually
  • In a small group (up to 6 students)

Our timeline:  Students are welcome to start over the school holidays if they'd like a head start, working at whatever pace suits your family. A suggested week-by-week timeline is attached to the Compass News Feed published this week, along with the MTQ Tip Sheet, Working Mathematically guide and Student Checklist.

Key date:  Projects due Friday 28 August 2026 to Kelvin Tang by email (email address in the Compass News Feed message).

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. All students who take part will receive a certificate of participation at the conclusion of the MTQ.

We can't wait to see what our mathematicians come up with!
