Year 1

Marvellous Minibeasts incursion

On Tuesday 2 June, Year 1 students participated in the Marvellous Minibeasts incursion. We had a wonderful time getting up close to all of the minibeasts we have been learning about.

Our special visitor, Liz, shared many fascinating facts about minibeasts and even arrived wearing a stick insect on her hat! The students rotated around four tables of activities. We had the opportunity to explore preserved minibeasts using magnifying glasses and microscopes. They also enjoyed handling live crickets and millipedes and learning more about their features and behaviours. The students also got to craft a minibeast from plasticine. A highlight for many students, though, was stepping inside a butterfly tent, where students were surrounded by beautiful butterflies and got to feed them.

The incursion was a fantastic hands-on learning experience that brought our classroom investigations to life. It was wonderful to see the excitement, curiosity, and enthusiasm that the students showed throughout the day as they discovered more about the amazing world of minibeasts.

“I loved when the butterfly landed on me and seeing the wings of the butterflies inside the chrysalis.”   Lydia, 1G

“My favourite part was using the spoon to catch crickets.”   Ethan, 1G

Minibeasts Day

The Year 1s have been learning about ‘Marvellous Minibeasts’ all term, and have learned about the interesting features of different backyard (and schoolground!) creatures. Throughout the term, they have explored the school grounds, collected data, and drawn labelled diagrams of different minibeasts. They have also practised writing information texts about many minibeasts. As part of our celebration of learning, the Year 1s dressed up as their favourite minibeast and had a day filled with minibeast activities last Friday, 19 June, such as a Scavenger Hunt, Craft, Minibeast Disco and a viewing of ‘A Bug’s Life’ movie in the afternoon.

“I really enjoyed our Minibeasts incursion and seeing all the REAL bugs! They were like the ones in my ‘Bug Atlas Book’ at home”   Chace, 1D

“I have loved making Minibeast craft, like painting on Minibeast Day”    Kiko, 1D

“I loved doing the paintings of Minibeasts”   Ben, 1D

“I loved watching the ‘A bug’s life movie’ and my favourite character was the caterpillar!”   Lucas, 1G

“I enjoyed the scavenger hunt on Minibeasts Day the best!”    Shawn, 1G
