National Careers Week 11 - 17th May

During Week 4, Elderslie High School celebrated National Careers Week. We had a visit from The Australian Defence Force, University of Wollongong and Australian College of Physical Education. We also put the Spotlight on our Staff as the Future Teachers Club interviewed them about their Pathways to Career and what they love about teaching. High School should give students the skills, values and ability to become successful in the career that they choose. Elderslie High School joins a nationwide movement of passionate individuals and organisations dedicated to shaping careers. 

Future Teachers Club

Year 10 Future Teachers have welcomed students from Year 5 to experience a day at High School as part of our Transition Taster days with surrounding Primary Schools. They led a

“Rags to Riches” Newspaper Costume activity and a Tour of our School. The students  showed leadership, problem solving skills and enthusiasm as they helped Year 5 students transition into high school. 

A HUGE Congratulations to Year 11 student Jett who has been accepted into the Step Up into Teaching University Program. Jett will study two units of an Education Degree of his choice in an intensive program over the Schools Holidays at The Australian Catholic University, Strathfield. Well Done Jett! We cannot wait to see where this opportunity takes you.  

All members of the Future Teachers Club are invited to attend the GMSEN Future Teachers Conference to be held on Wednesday 22nd July at The University of Wollongong - Liverpool Campus. They will be participating in workshops, listening to key note speakers and have access to staff from Teach NSW and The University of Wollongong. White Card - May 2026

Students successfully completed their White Card qualification this week in preparation for upcoming work experience and to support their applications for apprenticeships in their chosen industries. 

The White Card is a mandatory requirement for anyone wishing to work in the construction industry. The course provides essential knowledge of Work Health and Safety (WHS) and ensures students understand the legislative requirements before beginning any tasks on a worksite.

Fast Forward - Year 10

Year 10 students attended an excursion to WSU Kingswood for 2026 — an exciting and inspiring experience! The university day gave students a valuable glimpse into campus life and what university has to offer, including information on courses and guidance on HSC subject selection that can support future applications to WSU. The program is designed to boost student confidence and academic readiness while increasing awareness of post-school education options. It also highlights the lifelong benefits of learning and the diverse career pathways a university degree can open up.

Macarthur Careers Expo 

On Thursday, 4 June, our Year 10 students attended the Macarthur Area Careers Expo (MACE) at the Minto Indoor Sports Centre, where they enthusiastically explored a wide range of exciting future career and study opportunities.

This highly anticipated annual event brings together students from across the Macarthur region with employers, industry professionals, training organisations, TAFE, and universities. It provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in meaningful conversations about their aspirations and gain first-hand insights into the many pathways available after school.

Western Sydney Careers Expo  

Our Year 11 students recently attended the Western Sydney Careers Expo at Sydney Olympic Park, where they took an exciting step towards planning their futures. The expo provided students with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of post-school pathways and gain valuable information to help them make informed decisions about life after school.

Thinking of Leaving School at the End of 2026? Start Planning Now!

Students planning to enter the workforce at the end of 2026 are encouraged to register with a range of apprenticeship and traineeship providers. Now is the time to research the industries you're interested in and bookmark the websites of key employers. Many large companies are already advertising their 2027 apprenticeship and traineeship positions—or will be in the coming months—in preparation for next year’s intake. 

Don’t forget to also check your local council and businesses, as they often post upcoming opportunities on their websites. Early preparation and regular checking can give you the edge in securing your ideal role.

Year 10: The IMPORTANCE of Work Experience-Gaining skills in the real world of work

Many students have engaged in work experience this semester. Work experience provides real life experience in the industry or occupation of their choice. Students can be inspired and motivated by the people they meet and benefit from connecting with employers. Students must be at least 14 years old to participate.

Year 10 students are encouraged to participate in work experience at least once through the year. Students can try multiple occupations over the year to give them a good sense of what they may and may not be interested in. 

REASONS TO DO WORK EXPERIENCE

• Experience in the industry
• Increased knowledge of their careers pathways. 
• Looks good on a resume to employers.
• Could gain an apprenticeship or job

Students who attend work experience are placed on school business; therefore the absence does not affect their attendance. 

Interested students can visit the careers office for further information and the Student Placement Forms. Students will also complete the My Work Experience Modules that need to be completed prior to attending work experience.

How to find work experience

The internet is a major resource to help a student in securing work experience. Students can email or call workplaces to ask whether they provide work experience or students are also encouraged to walk up to business’ and introduce themselves and ask to speak to the manager. Alternatively, parents and other adults around the student may be able to suggest workplaces that they know take students for work experience.
