Unit 1 VCE Legal Studies Incursion – Police Visit
On Thursday 31 March 2026, the Unit 1 VCE Legal Studies class welcomed a visit from two members of Victoria Police – Senior Sergeant Marks Rogers; and Constable Emily Smith. This was a preview to our learning in Term 2, when we will explore VCE Legal Studies Unit 1 Area of Study 3 Sanctions – in particular Study Design Key Knowledge points: institutions enforcing criminal law, and the balance between institutional powers and individual rights.
The officers shared a wealth of information about life on the job, progression of their careers and common issues faced at the moment by police. We learnt that the most common crimes reported in the Oakleigh area are theft of cars, theft of property from cars (often left unlocked), as well as domestic violence and intervention orders.
The “Legal Eagles” (students) asked many probing questions – and those who spoke up were rewarded with very candid and detailed responses from our visitors! We are now in Term 2, and have explored these topics in class, reflecting upon the answers the officers gave us.
We were treated to a guided tour of all the equipment the officers must carry with them as part of their uniform, including passing around a baton!
