HPE News (Health and Physical Education)

Beginning Of Term 2 :
Year 7 Invasion Games
This semester, Year 7 students have been actively engaged in an exciting Invasion Games unit during their PE lessons, building both their practical skills and understanding of game play.
Throughout the unit, students have explored a variety of sports including rugby, basketball, netball, handball, hockey, touch rugby, tchoukball and ultimate, developing key skills such as running, passing, defending and decision-making. A strong focus has been placed on communication and teamwork, with students learning how to apply tactics to improve performance in game situations.
They have also deepened their knowledge of rules, scoring systems and positions, while reflecting on their own progress and identifying areas for improvement. It has been fantastic to see students participating enthusiastically, challenging themselves, and growing in confidence as they develop their invasion games skills.

Wheelchair Basketball
Our Year 9 Health and Physical Education students recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in wheelchair basketball sessions delivered by Wheelchair Victoria.
Across the sessions, students were challenged to step outside their comfort zones as they learnt the fundamental skills of wheelchair basketball, including manoeuvring, passing, shooting, communication, and teamwork. The experience provided plenty of energy, laughter, and healthy competition, while encouraging students to develop new movement skills in an unfamiliar sporting environment.
These practical sessions also gave students valuable insight into adaptive sport and the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities in physical activity.
Students quickly discovered the physical demands, tactical thinking, and resilience required to compete from a wheelchair, gaining a deeper appreciation for athletes involved in disability sport. The sessions sparked meaningful discussions around empathy, respect, and the role sport can play in breaking down barriers.
The wheelchair basketball program has provided an authentic and engaging learning experience that directly connects to the students’ upcoming School Assessed Coursework (SAC). As part of their assessment, students will be analysing sport modification, participation barriers, and inclusive practices in physical activity.
This hands-on experience with Wheelchair Victoria has given students practical examples and real-world understanding that will support them as they prepare for their upcoming SAC.
Staff Wheelchair Basketball
At lunchtime, the excitement continued as staff joined in for their own wheelchair basketball challenge alongside Wheelchair Victoria. With plenty of enthusiasm, teamwork, and a few competitive moments, staff experienced firsthand the skill, coordination, and determination required to play from a wheelchair.
It was a fantastic way to further promote inclusion, community spirit, and lifelong participation in physical activity across our school. Be sure to check out the attached photos capturing some of the fun and action from the day.
