International Students Cooking for Harmony Week - EVERYONE BELONGS
With over half of Australians born overseas or having a parent who was, it highlights that cultural diversity is a core part of Australia’s identity.
Here at South Oakleigh College we pride ourselves on our inclusiveness as we strive to create a sense of belonging for all our students.
On Thursday Hiro and Susan organised a ‘sharing of cultural food’ event as part of our school BAKE initiative. They shared dumplings, Chinese specialty snacks, biscuits, crackers, candy and Jelly.
It was a great turnout and items went very quickly.
Thank you Hiro and Susan.

Year 10 Greek Easter Baking
As part of their Year 10 Greek studies, students enriched their understanding of Greek culture through a hands-on cooking experience, preparing traditional Greek Easter biscuits known as koulourakia.
Throughout the session, students practised using common Greek phrases related to food preparation, ingredients, and kitchen routines. This immersive activity not only brought cultural traditions to life but also strengthened students’ practical language skills in an authentic and enjoyable way.
Greek Department and Harmony Day 2026
As part of Harmony Week 2026, lunchtime came alive with the sounds and movements of traditional Greek dancing at South Oakleigh College. This annual event celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity, promoting inclusiveness, respect, and belonging under the theme “Everyone Belongs.” Students gathered on the basketball courts to take part, learning and performing traditional dances that celebrated Greek culture and history. It was wonderful to see students from all backgrounds joining in with enthusiasm, reflecting the rich and vibrant cultural make-up of South Oakleigh College.

Open Night
The Japanese team celebrated another successful Open Night at the end of last Term, with the help of our lovely student volunteers -Kintan, Dhruvi, Anastasia, Joycelin and Utano.
Our student helpers were very effective in talking about their experiences studying Japanese to prospective parents and students who may be part of our South Oakleigh College community in the future.
Harmony Week
As part of our celebrations of Harmony Week earlier this Term, we opened up the Theatre and had students (and staff) view the Ghibli film Ponyo for a relaxing lunchtime session.
Attendees had the opportunity to relax while watching the film, and while learning about and appreciating the diverse cultures of our school community.
In Our Classes
Term 2 commenced with many of our classes preparing to finish up units of work. In the Year 9 Advanced class, students presented a multimedia speech about their favourite foods in Japanese that they prepared over the school holidays. All students who presented their work did fantastic job demonstrating their HRRRT values!
