Mathematics

Staff Professional Development
Wow! Our staff have been doing a lot of mathematics learning over the past few weeks. Our involvement in the Mathematics Acceleration Program (MAP) recently began with Miss Fraser, Mrs Traynor and myself attending a professional learning day in the city. During this session we explored explicit instruction in mathematics, which focuses on clearly modelling and explaining new learning for students. We also continued building our understanding of Cognitive Load Theory, which helps teachers present new information in ways that make learning easier for students to understand and remember. Another key focus was planning effective daily maths review lessons, which give students regular opportunities to practise important skills and strengthen their understanding. These review sessions also help teachers see what students already know and identify areas where they may need further support.
Following this, classroom teachers participated in a professional learning session focused on place value, an important foundation for many areas of mathematics. During the day, teachers explored practical, research-informed strategies to support the teaching of place value and help students build strong number understanding and fluency. The session also provided opportunities for teachers to work together and develop a consistent approach to teaching mathematics across the school. These were the first of several professional learning sessions we will take part in as part of the program, and we look forward to continuing to use these strategies to support all students in developing strong confidence and skills in mathematics.
