German Activities

German students across all year levels had the opportunity to experience some ‘real life German’ in Term 2 with the entire Year 7 and 8 cohorts enjoying a bilingual puppet show in our Performing Arts Centre and the elective German students from Year 8 to Year 12 attending the German Film Festival in the city. 

Bilingual Puppet Show 

This year, Patterson River Secondary College engaged Carrousel Theatre for the first time to bring a German-English bilingual version of ‘Cinderella’ (in German: ‘Aschenputtel’) to life in a puppet show. With two shows, one for the Year 7s and one for the Year 8s, the Performing Arts Centre was buzzing with audience participation calling for ‘Aschenputtel’ to look out at various times. Students learned some new vocabulary and came away realising that they were able to understand much more than they had anticipated! With half of the Year 7 students learning about puppetry in Drama at the same time, the show nicely tied in content across two different subjects. 

German Film Festival 

For the third year running, Patterson River Secondary College students attended the German Film Festival in the city. With 70 students from German elective subjects across Years 8 to 12, we had a whole cinema to ourselves to watch the German film ‘The Door-to-Door Bookstore’ (in German: ‘Der Buchspazierer’) at the ‘Kino Cinema’ on Collins Street. Did you know that ‘Kino’ is the German word for ‘cinema’? And therefore, the cinema’s name is actually ‘Cinema Cinema’!? 

After the movie, we made our way across town to have a German take-away lunch from the Munich Brauhaus. In glorious sunshine, students enjoyed Schnitzel, Bratwurst, a tasting platter or Käsespätzle as well as Pretzels, sitting on the steps of the Exhibition Centre and enjoying the view of Polly Woodside. After walking off all the carbs that were consumed at lunchtime, we went back to Flinders Street station and made our way back home after a successful, enjoyable and very German day! In true German fashion, we got back to school right on schedule!
