LIFT Dance Incursion

On Wednesday May 14th, 16 dance students from Years 9-12 were invited to take part in a dance workshop and mock audition with Skylar Delphinus, a professional dancer who has travelled and performed all over the world.  We started with a warm-up and technique focused exercises where we learnt ways to improve skills such as our jumps and turns.  Skylar then taught us a commercial-style combination and guided us through the audition process just like it would happen in the industry.  We learnt how to pick up choreography quickly, perform under pressure and present ourselves confidently.  After learning the choreography, we were divided into groups of four and performed it just like you would in a real audition.  It was such a valuable experience that gave us a real insight into what auditions are like in the professional dance world. We’re so grateful to have had this amazing opportunity!

Victorian State School Spectacular

At the beginning of the year, 16 students from Years 8-12 were selected to represent our school in the Mass Dance section of the Victorian State Schools Spectacular (VSSS).  We have been working hard to learn the 8 routines that we will be performing at John Cain Arena on Saturday September 13th.  Recently, we attended 2 external Hub rehearsals at Clyde Creek Primary school along with some other schools, where we learnt more choreography and practised together.  Having the opportunity to practise with the larger group and the VSSS staff has really made it easier to understand the choreography, our positions and to see the show starting to come together.

We have 2 more Hub rehearsals in June and August, before we head to the arena for the two performances.  This is a great opportunity for us and we are looking forward to the shows.  Tickets to the Victorian State Schools will go on sale later this term.

Drama Showcase

On Wednesday May 7th, Drama students from Year 8 to Year 11 VCE Theatre Studies presented a showcase of work developed in class throughout the semester. A wide variety of performances were on display for the current Year 7 Drama students, who responded with enthusiastic and positive feedback.

Among the highlights were the Year 11 Romeo and Juliet piece, praised for its “high intensity and drama,” and the Year 8 Theatre Sports Improvisation group, whose “funny and silly” routine had the audience laughing. Year 9 students also took the stage, performing modern comedy group pieces and short monologues, including a witty rendition of The Importance of Being Earnest and a lively rom-com group number from Mamma Mia

It was a highly enjoyable afternoon and the Drama Department is already looking forward to showcasing more student talent in Semester 2.

Year 8 Band Excursion

Friday May 9th was a fun day for the Year 8 band elective.

Meeting at Carrum Station, we took the train to Flinders Street Station. We walked along the Yarra River through the Arts precinct, enjoying the view of the heart of Melbourne. We arrived at the Concert Hall to enjoy the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The performance titled “Wizardry School” was about a conductor, who used a wrong conducting spell and was transformed to a wizard from a long time ago.

The Orchestra Explored the magical ingredients of the Symphony Orchestra through the iconic music of John Williams, Saint-Saëns and Stravinsky. Our favourite music was most definitely from Harry Potter. The magical music cast a spell to return the conductor to his former self. The concert was fabulous and enjoyed by a full audience in the Concert Hall.

It was relaxing to enjoy lunch by the Yarra River. Visiting the Australian Centre for Moving Images was lots of fun. Each display was interactive; we were able to create recordings or enjoy video games old and new.

It was an amazing day. I had fun as did the whole band.

Junior Performing Arts Showcase: A Day of Talent and Excitement!

We recently celebrated an amazing day at the Junior Performing Arts Showcase, where our Year 7 and 8 students took centre stage to share their incredible talents. This special event gave 120 students from various performance groups a chance to shine, entertaining an audience of over 140 proud parents and friends.

Rehearsals filled the day with energy and preparation, building up to the moment when the audience began arriving just after lunch. Along with three Year 7 classes who were lucky enough to watch, the Performing Arts Centre was packed with excitement and anticipation.

For many students, it was their very first time performing on this stage—an experience that brought a mix of nerves and exhilaration. The showcase featured a variety of acts, including the Year 7E and Year 8 Concert Band, combined Year 7 and 8 singing groups, Year 8 Dance Elective and Dance Extension, the Production group, Year 8 Drama Elective and the Year 8 Percussion Ensemble.

The performances were met with great enthusiasm, leaving everyone impressed by the talent and confidence displayed—especially knowing that for many, it was their debut in front of a live audience.

Congratulations to all our performers for a fantastic day full of creativity, courage and community spirit!
