WAVERLEY DIVISION ATHLETICS – FRIDAY THE 21ST OF AUGUST

The VSC Division Athletics Team has been published on Compass for students to view. Relay training has been underway for a couple of weeks now with teams making great strides! If students wish to train for any of their individual events during lunchtime at school they are encouraged to send Ms Malander an email.

EASTERN METROPOLITAN REGION FINALS

NETBALL

Senior Girls

The senior girls won both other their pool matches against Mooroolbark and Brentwood convincingly. Heading into the final the girls were determined to play well and progress to the Grand Final. They had a convincing win against Camberwell Girls SC with all players doing a great job in their positions and also working really well as a team. We faced Rowville SC in the Grand Final. The Vermont girls played their best game. They were strong, timed passes well, defended every ball with determination and displayed fantastic sportsmanship, maturity and netball skills. It was a nail biting finish, unfortunately we lost by 1 goal. Well done girls on a great day of netball, you should all be very proud.

Senior Boys

The Senior boys gave a good account of themselves on the day but the opposition was just too good. Thanks to the four boys who filled in at the last minute to complete the team on the day.

Intermediate Boys

What a day out for the Intermediate Boys netball team! In their pool they were undefeated, winning all three games convincingly against Norwood, Brentwood and Lilydale. The team was amazing all day long, super committed with smooth transitions up and down the court. Jake H and Lewis W were a dynamic duo in the goal circle creating scoring opportunities with the help of the centre court. Rohnan S filled in for the day and held his own with intercepts and great defensive work all day.

The team went on to win the semi-final against Wantirna and then defeat Balwyn High School (19-11) in the grand final, even despite huge defensive losses of Archie C and Zane B and well done to Henry D for stepping up to the task in the last game. A big shout out to Tyler S and Lewis W who were our MVPs, you ran all day, found empty spaces with limited time on the bench- such a massive effort.

Looking forward to seeing how the team goes at the State Finals on the 31 August- good luck boys.

Year 8 Girls

The Year 8 girls had an outstanding day, winning all of their games to progress to the semi-finals. They unfortunately fell short against Rowville Secondary College, bringing their impressive winning streak to an end. Throughout the competition, the team demonstrated excellent skill, teamwork and respect towards their opponents, referees and supporters.

Year 8 Boys/Mixed

The Year 8 boys had an outstanding day of netball showing great teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Their hard work and perseverance saw them earn a place in the grand final, where they gave a strong performance against tough opposition. While they ultimately fell short, they should be proud of their achievements and the way they represented the school. Well done on a fantastic day!

Year 7 Girls

The Year 7 girls represented the school very well, displaying excellent teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day. Although they lost their first two games, they showed great resilience and bounced back to finish with a well-deserved win in their final match. They kept a positive attitude and encouraged each other throughout the day.

Year 7 Boys/Mixed

The Year 7 boys approached the day of netball with enthusiasm, resilience and a positive attitude. While they were unable to make it to the finals, the team continued to compete with determination and support one another in every match. Their effort, sportsmanship and willingness to keep trying were commendable, and they should be proud of the way they represented the school throughout the day. Well done on your persistence and teamwork.

BASKETBALL

Senior Girls

Well done to our Senior Girls basketball team! Although we only got to play two games due to a non-entry, you brought such great energy and team spirit. Our first game against Ringwood was off to a slightly slow start but ended stronger and more competitive; but unfortunately unable to take away the win. The second game against Wheelers Hill resulted in a win for Vermont. A special shout out to the Year 12s, Hannah L, Tess L, Caitlin C, Zoe F and Sophia T- it was their final time playing basketball at interschool sport and I am glad you seemed to be enjoying your day. For the year 11s hopefully, you sign up again for your last year in 2027.

AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL

Senior Boys

A relatively undermanned Senior Boys AFL side ventured to Elgar Park for the next stage of competition. Sadly, they suffered a loss in the first game which sucked the energy and enthusiasm out of the side for the remainder of the day. The team continued to try despite mounting injuries to the side. With losses to Lilydale and Ringwood in the first two games the boys were able to have a win in our final game of the day against Oakleigh South, a school located in the south of Oakleigh. Thanks to all for their contributions on the day and especially those who have finished their AFL journey at VSC.

Senior Girls

The senior girls footy team were underdone with numbers on the day of our EMR finals. With 12 available players and an error, courtesy of the website update accidentally removing us from the draw the night before it was decided by the convenor that we would play an entry match against Koonung Secondary College. The winner would enter the EMR competition for the day, and the losing teams day would end. The team competed as well as they could given the circumstances. Goal sneak Theodora was able to get one through the big sticks. Following that we ran out of legs, and our day ended there. Had we not had been hurt by last minute no shows we would have had a real chance at being a competitive team on the day.

Thanks to the players who turned up and committed to playing, as well as the students who communicated that they were unavailable due to illness/injury. You demonstrated integrity in spades. A testament to your character. It has been a pleasure coaching you. Good luck for your future footballing journeys.

Ms Malander

Intermediate Boys

The Year 9 & 10 boys put down a gallant effort throughout the day. Some injuries left some of our key players out, but the boys stood up against the challenge. The first game against Lilydale was a challenge, with the boys putting the pressure onto Lilydale early. Some quick goals from Nash G put VSC up by two goals at halftime. Unfortunately, the breeze was against us in the 2nd half and the boys ended up going down by 3 goals. The 2nd game against Norwood was a tough match-up, with the boys playing strong contested footy but getting very little reward for effort and ultimately going down by 6 goals. The final game was a chance to get some reward for effort and finish the day off on a high note. The boys moved the ball well, run and carried and put some quick damage on the scoreboard. They ultimately kicked away and beat Auburn to finish off the day. Standouts for the day were Lewis W, Miller R, Jake H, Archie C, Christian E & Zane B! Thanks to all the boys for the fantastic effort and sportsmanship on display!

FOOTBALL (SOCCER)

Senior Boys

The Senior Boys put together an impressive performance at the Regional Finals, winning their opening two matches 2-0 and 2-1, providing a chance to make it to the semi-finals. Despite a determined effort, they went down 2-0 in their last match against strong opposition. The team should be proud of their outstanding teamwork, skill and sportsmanship, representing the school with distinction throughout the competition.

Year 7 Boys/Mixed

The Year 7 soccer team had a successful day today, exhibiting a positive spirit, resilience and a determination that was present throughout.The first game against Lilydale yielded a strong 4-0 win, thanks to some exciting attacking soccer and plenty of goal-scoring opportunities with no return for the opposition. The momentum carried through to the second game, where Mooroolbark was dispatched 2-0 with another solid and mature team performance.The final pool game proved to be our biggest test of character and one that would showcase the resilience this team has developed. Finding ourselves 2-0 down, the Year 7’s remained composed and found a way to turn the game around for an inspiring 2-2 draw. The result ultimately guaranteed our place in the finals round and would live on for years as an example of never giving in.The final games were fiercely contested with each player leaving everything they had on the field to try and qualify for the State championships, ultimately falling narrowly short. Despite the result, today must be remembered as a triumph for the boys as they pushed themselves all the way. Every player proudly represented the school, displaying exceptional teamwork, spirit and a willingness to learn from every minute played in the tournament. Reaching the finals and a 2-2 draw on the way are results that each boy should be proud of. They played as a team, respected opponents and officials, and consistently put in a maximum effort. Well done on a great day of soccer Year 7’s! Our thanks to our Team Manager, Mr. Duiveman and coaches, Mahdiyar, Rohan and Finn.

Year 7 Girls

The Year 7 girls delivered an outstanding performance at the Regional Finals, showcasing exceptional skill, teamwork and determination throughout the day. They opened the competition with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against a strong Balwyn side before producing two dominant displays against Ringwood and Brentwood, scoring seven goals in each match while keeping both opponents scoreless.These impressive results secured a place in the final against Doncaster Secondary College. After a closely contested match, the scores remained locked at 0-0 at the end of regular time, requiring an additional 10 minutes of extra time. Despite a valiant effort, the girls conceded two goals to a strong Doncaster outfit in the extra period. Congratulations to the team on a fantastic campaign across both the Division and Regional competitions. You should be incredibly proud of your achievements and the way you represented the school.

INTERMEDIATE ROUND ROBIN HOCKEY

Girls

The first game against Highvale was won 5-0. It took 11 shots on goal before Emily A. finally got it past their keeper, and after that the team let loose. Darcey scored a rebound off a Highvale defender's foot, Emily A. got another 2 goals as well as one from Annika. Arleen and Dana managed to keep the ball out of our defensive circle for the entire game. In game 2 the team kept the goals coming, to beat Mount Waverly 8-0. Goals from Emily C, 3 from Annika and an impressive 4 goals from Emily A. It all came down to the final game against Glen Waverly. The game was tense, with neither team scoring in the first half. After a number of short corners, Emily A finally managed to sneak the ball into the net to not only win the game 1-0, but secure our spot in regionals next term! A huge shoutout to Micaela, Arleen and Emily C. who kitted up and had a go at goal keeping to support the team!

BASKETBALL

Boys/Mixed

What a great day out for the Intermediate Boys basketball! Well done to the A team who were so strong all day beating Glen Waverley with relative ease off the bat. Whilst it was a first close half versing Highvale- the boys came out much stronger and determined in the second half and ended up running away with the win. The final round against Mount Waverley was highly anticipated, both teams remained undefeated for the day. The team rallied, came out firing pressuring the ball carriers, forcing turnovers and won convincingly in the end despite the impressive height of the opposition! It was great to see the team work so hard together also being supported by the coach Koby R. Some standout performances include Miller R who was exceptional all day long. Jake H was everywhere too, intercepting, rebounding and shooting 3s. The Bs were also impressive, they lost a nail-biter against Glen Waverley coming close to the win. There was a lot of the improvement throughout the day, and they were able to beat Highvale and then Mount Waverley in another close match. Well done to Preston C who was defensively strong and able to create opportunities, as well as Lucas P whose defensive effort, passing and score involvements got the team over the line in the final game. Also, a big thank you to Josh C and Liam S in coaching and supporting the team on the day.

Girls

Both the A and B teams put in strong performances this round. The B team opened with a dominant 25-10 win over Highvale, powered by relentless front-court pressure and early scoring from Bella, plus strong finishing from Lily. Game two against GW saw the girls fight back from an 8-0 deficit thanks to gritty defense from Charlie, more great work from Lily, key turnovers forced by Nez, and clutch scoring from Chelsea, though they narrowly went down by 5. The B team bounced back with an entertaining shooting display to comfortably beat Mount Waverley. The A team was equally impressive, cruising past Highvale 43-10 behind Zara’s rebounding, Perri’s classy finishes, Alex’s on-ball pressure, and Emilie’s scoring from range. They followed up with a hard-fought 10-point win over GW. In a “grand final” against an undefeated Mount Waverley side, the girls competed hard all game but fell short by 8. Great effort all round!A big thank you to Robbie for coaching the B team and Fiona for taking charge of the A team.

TABLE TENNIS

Congratulations to our teams on an outstanding performance at Intermediate Table Tennis! All four of our teams demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship, focus, and skill on the tables against tough competitors.

The competition was very strong throughout the day, but a big congratulations goes to our Boys B team, who took out 1st place! The Boys A team managed to take 2nd place despite some very strong contenders—making it to the final before being overcome by GWSC's individual players. Caue L was a standout for his tenacity, coming close to clawing back a match from two games down at one point.

The girls' teams also faced tough competition throughout the day. The Girls B team took out 3rd place, while the Girls A team rounded out our results with a valiant 4th place. A shoutout to Grace L for her terrific attitude in particular—she had a smile on her face all day in spite of some really challenging matches.

As always, a big thank you to all those who attended and supported each other throughout the day. I am always amazed by the spirit, kindness, and sportsmanship on display. Finally, thank you to our own Josh Chia for his expert coaching and the terrific spirit he brings every year!
