VET – Vocational Education and Training

Are your interested in applying for a VET study in 2027?

VET is available to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 with courses available in the following key areas:

· Service Industry

· Creative Industry

· Technology Industry

· Trade Industry

Students considering applying for a VET study in 2027, are encouraged to check out the VET course offerings in the provider handbooks located in the 'Local Providers of VET Courses' on the college website. VET | Vermont Secondary College.

All potential VET students are encouraged to complete the VET Expression of Interest form (EOI) available from Pathways. Students will need to discuss their interests with the pathways team to determine suitability and ALL NEW VET students are encouraged to attend the VET Information evening with a parent on Wednesday 5th August in the Fallon Centre Auditorium at 6:15pm to learn more about VET and how it works.

Part of the application requires students to create a USI (Unique Student Identifier) Create your USI - Unique Student Identifier linking the VET course to the student on an external portal. NOTE: We cannot apply for VET studies without your USI number, this is an enrolment requirement!

Key information:

1. Potential VET students are expected to commit to their selected VET course for 12 months

2. VET is studied per calendar year, not semester based

3. Students receive private study periods

4. All VET courses are studied off site at TAFE, RTO or Secondary School offering VET

5. The student is responsible to arrange travel to and from VET

6. Most VET courses take 2 years to complete

7. All VET courses contribute to the VCE - either directly with a study score or via 10% block credit

8. VET is a very expensive elective which the school pays; all the tuition costs and some materials fees

Due to the increased popularity in VET across the region, we cannot guarantee students a place. However, to increase the chances, we recommend students return the VET EOI with a hard copy of the USI before the application period commences in early August. Note: We cannot accept applications without the hard copy USI.

Current Year 1 VET students that wish to continue their VET studies are required to complete the Year 2 re-enrolment form. Should current VET students wish to apply for a NEW VET course they will need to complete the Year 1 VET EOI form available from Pathways.

Open Days

Tertiary Open days commence from Sunday 26 July until Sunday 30 August and form an important part of student’s career exploration. See the attached Open Day flyer for the key tertiary providers dates. We encourage students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to attend open days to gain firsthand knowledge about university life. The opportunity to meet the teaching faculty asking specific questions about courses they may be interested in, explore the campus facilities, connect with current students to attain real-life insights to the student experience including workload, teaching and transition from secondary school and the ability to understand the course entry requirements. Tertiary Open days assist students in goal setting, learning about the course entry pre-requisites which additionally helps with in school subject selection and assists students in making informed decisions about their future pathways.

Work Experience

Work experience participation is optional at VSC, however we strongly encourage all students aged 15yrs+ to get involved in this very beneficial and rewarding program. Students can undertake Work Experience every year until they graduate VSC.

Work experience provides young people with a taste of the real world of work and a clearer understanding of a particular industry, field or business they may be interested in pursuing in the future.  It assists in career discovery and exploration, goal setting and decision making whilst preparing students for VCE or VCE VM (Vocational Major), future tertiary studies, apprenticeship/traineeships or full-time work.

There are no designated time frames for students to complete placements as we believe a flexible delivery arrangement provides students with a better opportunity to meet the availability and operational time frames of businesses and industries within the community.  This also means we are not competing with other local schools which can limit student’s placement opportunities. 

Placement dates are arranged through consultation and negotiation between the employer, school and student to maximise the experience.  However, if your young person is not going on the Central Australia to Darwin trip, they may want to consider the last week of Term 3 as the perfect opportunity to undertake work experience.

What is Career Development?

Career Development is the lifelong process of managing life, learning and work (paid and unpaid) over our lifespan.  The ability to make informed decisions, manage and transition through change for a personally determined future.

Young people build their career development through self-awareness; understanding how they make decisions and how these decisions impact future aspirations through exploration, identifying interests, values and preferred learning styles through careers exploration activities such as Morrisby in Year 9 and Careers Tools in Year 10.  The ability to research a wide range of career options helping them to select subjects they may enjoy learning whilst aligning to tertiary course pre-requisite requirements in the future or apprenticeship/traineeship requirements and work. 

Career development is further enhanced by juggling the expectations and requirements of school with extra-curricular activities like sport and family responsibilities, part-time work, community involvement and social interests.
