Feast of St Mary MacKillop: Courage, Faith and Hope in Action

Each year on 8 August, we celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia's first saint. This is especially significant for us at Nazareth College as one of our six Houses is MacKillop House. While she lived in the nineteenth century, her life and message remain deeply relevant for young people today. In a world that often measures success by achievement, popularity, or material wealth, Mary MacKillop reminds us that true greatness is found in faith, compassion, courage, and service to others.

Born in Melbourne in 1842, Mary recognised that many children, especially those from poor and rural communities, had little access to education. Rather than accepting this reality, she responded with determination and faith. Alongside Fr Julian Tenison Woods, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph, whose mission was to bring education and hope to those most in need. Mary was not content to simply identify problems; she acted to make a difference.

What is perhaps most inspiring is that Mary's journey was far from easy. She faced criticism, misunderstanding, financial hardship, and even excommunication for a time. Many people would have become discouraged or bitter. Instead, Mary remained steadfast in her trust in God and her commitment to her mission. Her famous words, "Never see a need without doing something about it," continue to challenge us today.

Mary's example offers valuable lessons for us all. She teaches us that faith is not simply about what we believe but about how we live. It calls us to notice the needs around us and respond with generosity and compassion. Whether supporting a friend who is struggling, standing up for someone who feels excluded, contributing to our community, or working for justice, we each have opportunities to make a positive difference.

Mary also reminds us of the importance of resilience. Life rarely unfolds exactly as we plan. There will be setbacks, disappointments, and moments of uncertainty. Mary's life demonstrates that difficulties do not define us; rather, it is our response to them that shapes our character. Her trust in God allowed her to continue moving forward, even when the path ahead seemed unclear.

As we celebrate her feast day this week, we are invited not merely to admire St Mary MacKillop but to learn from her example. Her legacy challenges each of us to ask: How can I use my gifts to serve others? Where do I see need in my community? How can I be a person of hope, courage, and compassion?

May the life of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop inspire us to live with faith, integrity, and a commitment to making our world a better place, one small act of love and service at a time.
