Montessori

The Montessori team recently met to begin preparations for learning in Term 3. During the day, we were visited by our very thoughtful Student Voice Leaders. They came prepared with insights from their classmates about the work they have enjoyed so far, ways to support student learning, and what they would like to learn next.

We were very impressed with the depth of thought and clarity of ideas the students brought to the meeting. Our SVLs shared that they value using the Montessori materials to learn mathematical concepts, especially when they have time to practise and review their learning straight after a lesson. They also expressed how much they have enjoyed learning the Great Stories and using the Montessori timelines to explore the beginning of the universe through to the current century.

The SVLs explained the importance of keeping their learning journals—not only to track their learning but also to see their growth. They shared the joy they feel when working with friends to consolidate their learning and support one another. They did note, however, that the key to feeling successful when working with a partner is staying on task.

Looking ahead to Term 3, the students suggested reintroducing morning runs before learning time to “get rid of the wiggles.” They are also keen to learn more about ancient civilisations, ancient Australia, and narrative writing. But most importantly, they would love even more maths.

We would like to thank the SVLs and all students for their enthusiasm for learning and their thoughtful contributions. The SVLs play an important role in our classrooms as they gather ideas from their peers to share areas of success and improvement, not only during planning days but every week during our class meetings. We look forward to implementing some of their ideas next term.

Kind regards,

Sandy Kaye
