KLA Feature - Year 10
On Wednesday 12th August, Our Year 10 students attended the Bstreetsmart Safe Driving Excursion at Afterpay Arena. Students took part in a powerful and confronting experience designed to increase their awareness of the real-life consequences of road trauma. They listened to personal stories, witnessed practical demonstrations and participated in interactive activities that helped our students to explore the major factors that contribute to road crashes, including speed, distraction, alcohol, fatigue, risk-taking and peer influence. The day provided an important opportunity for our students to reflect on their choices and behaviours that can help keep themselves and others safe, as both drivers and passengers. This excursion provided a very valuable experience that we hope will encourage our students to make safe, responsible decisions every time they are on the road. A massive thank you to the PDHPE staff, especially Mrs Muscat and Mrs McElroy for making this day possible.
Today, as a College, we celebrated Literature Day, with this year’s theme, ‘Symphony of Stories’. Year 10 certainly embraced the occasion, with an incredibly high number of students participating, dressing up individually or in groups as characters from books, movies, television and popular culture. Our Homeroom Team was not to be outdone either! The fashion parade was a wonderful display of the enthusiasm, creativity and school spirit of our fantastic Year 10 students. Choosing our winners was an incredibly difficult decision, as the effort and creativity on display were outstanding. A special shout-out to our winning group, who brought Toy Story to life with an incredible collection of characters! Our winning individual, Ainsley from 10 Wright, also deserves a huge mention for her amazing Bumblebee costume — which actually transformed before our eyes from Bumblebee into the car! We would have loved to award everyone a prize — the Homeroom Team was so impressed by the effort, creativity and enthusiasm shown by every student. Special congratulations to 10 Wright, who also took out the Attendance Award for the day with an amazing 100% attendance! Well done, Year 10! You certainly brought the Symphony of Stories to life!
Our Year 10 students have continued to be wonderful examples of service within our local community through the Catechist and Aged Care Programs. Through their generosity, compassion and willingness to give their time to others, our students continue to live out the Gospel in a very tangible way. They are truly the hands and feet of Christ, bringing joy, connection and care to those they encounter. We are incredibly proud of the way they continue to embrace opportunities to serve others and make a positive difference in our community.
It was also wonderful to have two Year 10 students recognised by members of our local community for the way they stepped up to support others in a time of need. Their actions reflected the words of Mary MacKillop, who encouraged us to “never see a need without doing something about it.” Both students demonstrated genuine compassion, courage and care, becoming a source of help and calm during a stressful situation. We are incredibly proud of Zoe (10 Kenny) and Rose (10 MacKillop) for the way they put their faith into action and demonstrated that small acts of kindness can make a significant difference to others.
Year 10 students have been taking time to reflect on their attendance and the impact it can have on their learning, wellbeing and future opportunities. Through the mantra ‘Showing Up for My Future’, students have been encouraged to recognise that every day counts and to consider the choices and strategies they can put in place to improve their attendance. It has been a valuable opportunity for students to take ownership of their attendance and reflect on how consistently showing up can help them achieve their goals.
With Year 10 examinations taking place early in Term 4, now is the time for students to begin preparing and developing effective study habits. Students are encouraged to regularly review their classwork, organise their notes, identify areas they need to revise and seek support from their teachers where needed. Consistent preparation over the coming weeks will help students feel confident and well-prepared for their exams. We encourage all Year 10 students to use this time wisely, stay organised and approach their exams with a positive mindset.
Our much-anticipated Urban Challenge is coming up, providing Year 10 students with a fantastic opportunity to step outside the classroom and put their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills into action. Working together in their Homeroom groups, students will navigate their way through the city, completing challenges and making decisions while working within a set budget. It promises to be a fun and memorable two days that will encourage students to collaborate, think creatively and support one another as they take on the challenge together. We look forward to seeing our Year 10 students embrace the experience with enthusiasm and team spirit! Knowing how well they dressed up for Literature Day today we can’t wait to see what they come up with for their Urban Challenge themes! A reminder to parents that you need to accept the event on Compass and complete the Urban Challenge online forms as soon as possible.
It has been a wonderful and busy time for Year 10, with our students demonstrating creativity, compassion, responsibility, service and school spirit across so many aspects of College life. As we look towards the remainder of the year, we encourage our students to continue embracing opportunities, supporting one another and making us proud through their actions and choices. Well done, Year 10!
