A Special Encounter: The Election of Pope Leo XIV
The Last Surprise of Pope Francis
Our students were recently given a wonderful opportunity to step inside one of the most significant moments in the life of the Catholic Church, the election of Pope Leo XIV.
Students attended the launch of The Election of Pope Leo XIV: The Last Surprise of Pope Francis, meeting the book’s authors, Gerard O’Connell and Elisabetta Piqué, two highly respected Vatican journalists who were closely connected with Pope Francis and have followed the life of the Church for many years.
An Inside Look at the Election of Pope Leo XIV
The authors provided students with a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into the 2025 conclave, sharing how Cardinal Robert Prevost emerged as the successful candidate and was ultimately elected Pope Leo XIV.
Students were able to hear about the discernment, conversations and unexpected developments that took place during the election process. Hearing these stories directly from journalists who were close to the events gave students a unique perspective on the way leadership within the Church is discerned.
Remembering Pope Francis
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the session was hearing the authors share their personal stories and memories of Pope Francis.
Having known Jorge Bergoglio before he became Pope, the authors were able to share stories that revealed the person behind the papal office, his warmth, humility, compassion and genuine concern for people.
These stories encouraged students to reflect on Pope Francis not simply as a global religious leader, but as a person who sought to listen, accompany and walk alongside others.
Learning About Synodality
A significant takeaway for our students was a deeper understanding of Synodality.
Students learnt that Synodality is about:
Listening, Walking Together, Discerning, Participating and Mission.
The experience highlighted that the Church is not simply led by one person, but is a community called to listen to one another, discern God's will together and participate in the mission of the Church.
This strongly reflects the Church’s vision of a community where every voice is valued, everyone is invited to participate, and all are called to journey together in faith.
A Memorable Learning Experience
The book launch provided our students with much more than an opportunity to learn about the election of a new Pope. It allowed them to encounter the stories, people and experiences behind a significant moment in the life of the Church.

LIFTED GO: Launch of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Social Justice Statement 2026–27
The Cost of Our Living: Economic and Social Justice for the Common Good
Our Year 8 Mary MacKillop Award Program students recently had the opportunity to participate in Lifted GO, a Diocesan initiative launching the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference’s 2026–27 Social Justice Statement.
Hosted by Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese in partnership with the Diocese of Parramatta’s Mission Enhancement Team, Lifted GO brought together young people from across the Diocese to explore what it means to live our faith through justice, service, peace and care for creation.
Faith into Action
Students were encouraged to reflect on the connection between love of God, love of self and love of neighbour, and to consider how they can respond to the needs of others, particularly those who are poor, vulnerable or marginalised.
Through prayer, discussion and reflection, students explored the question:
“How can I put my faith into action?”
The Social Justice Statement also challenges us to become peacemakers, drawing on Scripture and the teachings of Pacem in Terris by Pope St John XXIII and Fratelli Tutti by Pope Francis.
Students were encouraged to return to their school communities ready to SEE, DISCERN, ACT and REFLECT on practical ways they can promote justice, build peace and care for creation.
Called to GO
Lifted GO reminds us that faith is not simply something we believe; it is something we live.
May our students continue to be inspired to go forth, serve others and be witnesses to the love of Christ in our school and wider community.

Faith in Action: Supporting Our Community
At Caroline Chisholm College, Faith in Action calls us to put our Catholic faith into practice by showing compassion, upholding the dignity of every person and supporting those in need. As Jesus reminds us, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Through fundraising and service, our students have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and live out the values of compassion, justice and service.
We invite students and families to support two upcoming fundraising initiatives:
Lollies for Luke
Supporting the Luke Priddis Foundation, Lollies for Luke, hosted by the Gilmore House will be held on Wednesday, 2 September. Lollies will be available for purchase on the COLA at Recess and Lunch.
Congo Aid Fundraising BBQ
Hosted by Jackson House, the Congo Aid Fundraising BBQ will be held on Friday, 4 September at lunchtime on the COLA.
Students are encouraged to support these initiatives by pre-purchasing through Qkr! or paying via EFTPOS on the day.
By supporting these initiatives, our community can continue to put our faith into action and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
