Level 2: Connect

Year 2 Newsletter Summary

What a fantastic few weeks it has been in Year 2! The students have continued to work hard and show great enthusiasm across all areas of learning. We are very proud of the positive attitude and effort students have been demonstrating in the classroom each day.

2B and 2C have also enjoyed participating in cooking with Mr. Marco, which has been a wonderful opportunity for students to practise teamwork, following instructions and trying new things. The students loved cooking dumplings and showed excellent cooperation and responsibility throughout these sessions (with 2A to cook in Week 8).

Students have also been working extremely well during recent assessments. We have been impressed with the way students have approached their tasks with confidence, persistence and a willingness to do their best. It has been lovely to see the growth and progress being made across the year level.

As we move through Reconciliation Week, students have been engaging in important conversations and learning experiences that help build understanding, respect and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives. The students have shown thoughtful participation and curiosity during these activities.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to another wonderful few weeks of learning together!

English

Core Literacy

Students have continued developing their phonics and spelling knowledge through learning the augh sound and reviewing the sounds and morphemes covered throughout the term. They have been practising reading and spelling words with different sound patterns while building confidence to help with reading and writing. Students have also revised prefixes, suffixes and base words, helping them to better understand how words are formed and how meanings can change. In addition, students have been practising contractions, identifying syllables in words and revising tricky words to strengthen their fluency, spelling and reading confidence.

Reading & Writing

In Literacy, students have been learning about procedure texts and exploring how to write clear instructions using sequencing words, headings and detailed steps. Students enjoyed writing a text to make a peanut butter and jam sandwich while identifying the important features of a procedure. They then used their creativity to create their own procedure texts inspired by the story Wombat Stew. Students had lots of fun inventing silly ingredients and writing detailed steps while continuing to build their understanding of procedural writing.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been learning about fractions and exploring how whole objects and collections can be divided into equal parts. They have been identifying, creating and comparing halves, quarters and eighths through hands-on activities, visual models and real-life examples. Students have also been introduced to the CUBE strategy to support problem-solving in Maths. This strategy encourages students to carefully read and understand worded problems by circling important numbers, underlining the question, boxing key words and checking their work. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence in explaining their mathematical thinking and applying new strategies during learning tasks.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been learning about ecosystems in Australia and exploring how living things depend on each other and their environment to survive. Students investigated a variety of Australian ecosystems, including deserts, rainforests, oceans and bushlands, while learning about the plants and animals that live within them. They discussed how ecosystems can change and the importance of caring for the environment to help protect habitats and wildlife. Students have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm while developing their understanding of the natural world around them.
