Level 1: Connect

Nishtha Kapoor (1A), Lizzie Parmar (Mon, Tues, Wed) Rhiannon Harris-Tudor (Thurs, Fri) (1B) and Robyn Hall (1C)

Hello Level 1 families,

Our students have been working incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and are making fantastic progress. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm, effort, and growing confidence they are bringing to their learning each day. We also greatly appreciate the support shown through homework, which helps reinforce and extend the learning taking place at school.

Reminders

Take home books will continue to be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays this term.

Homework will continue this term. Today, if your child returned their homework book, they would have received their next homework matrix all ready to go in their homework book. Other students will have a loose homework sheet in their bag. This will be due back in two weeks time.

National Reconciliation Week is coming up (27th May - 3rd June). We will be reading books and having discussions on this topic and we encourage you to have conversations at home to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples.

Werribee Zoo excursion: Please ensure you have given permission and paid via Compass for our excursion on Thursday 11th June.

Literacy

Over the next fortnight in Literacy, students will be exploring the mentor text The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. Through this engaging story, students will develop their understanding of characters by describing their actions, identifying hero and villain characterisations, and exploring how characters develop and change throughout the story. Students will also investigate how exaggeration is used to make the story entertaining and meaningful. As part of their learning, students will discuss the moral and themes of the story, with a particular focus on empathy and understanding others’ feelings and perspectives.

Core Literacy

Our daily Core Literacy lessons include many English components including handwriting, dictation, card deck, making words with letters and their sounds, reading words and texts and comprehension.

It is also a time when we incorporate the student text book, Spelling Mastery, twice a week into our lessons to revise sounds, letter names, spelling rules and the reading and spelling of words.

Here's what we will be focusing on over the next fortnight:

Heart Words - review of our, your, four

                           - said, there, were

Morphology - Doubling or 1-1-1 Rule, phoneme -igh and suffix -less

Mathematics

Over the next fortnight in Mathematics, students will continue developing their additive thinking and place value understanding through a range of hands-on learning experiences. Students will practise addition strategies, including using the “doubles plus one” strategy, as well as adding to make 20 and subtracting from 20. They will also explore place value by identifying numbers that are 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, and 10 less within the range of 20–120. In our money unit, students will learn to identify the difference between two amounts, add and subtract money, and count collections of money to determine whether they can afford an item. Students will also complete summative assessments in both Place Value and Additive Thinking.

Inquiry

Over the next fortnight in Inquiry, students will explore the continents of Africa and North America. Students will investigate maps of each continent and learn about their key features, including the number of countries, languages spoken, and the largest and smallest countries within each continent. They will also discover important landmarks and geographical features, such as the Nile River in Africa and the Great Plains in the United States. Through these learning experiences, students will continue developing their geographical knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

We hope you have a wonderful two weeks ahead. As always, if you have any questions about the learning or your child, please don't hesitate to organise a time to speak to us.

Warm Regards,

The Level 1 Team
