Dear Level 1 Families,

We have had yet another wonderful week with the Level 1 students. They are all really starting to blossom and their lovely personalities are shining through.

We have been completing our online assessments this week. Level 1's have received 30 brand new iPads, so students have been able to use them for their testing. We have been very impressed with the way in which the students have shown gratitude and respect towards our new iPad's. Well done!

Term 2 Reminders:

Don't forget that next Friday is a Curriculum Day so SEPS will be closed to students. The following Monday will be the King's Birthday public holiday, so your children will enjoy a 4 day weekend.

Level 1 students head off every Friday to our revamped school library. It is a chance for them to browse through our fabulous selection of books and borrow up to two books each week. Books may be borrowed for up to two weeks.

Please encourage the return of library books on a Friday.

Please remember if your child has a lunch order that requires cutlery, the canteen does not supply cutlery, students need to bring their own from home. Thank you.

Take home books are taking longer than expected to be catalogued. We are so sorry. Fingers crossed for next week. Please see Wushka or your local library for now.

We encourage students to enjoy a fruit/vegetable snack at 10 am every day. We find this helps the students to stay energised and focused.

Literacy:

This past week, our mentor text was 'Come Down, Cat!', a fabulous book with lots of themes that we discussed in class, including those relating bravery, friendship, love, perserverance and overcoming fears. Our students wrote some amazing pieces of writing based on this book and we were very excited by their use of descriptive vocabulary, capital letters and powerful punctuation. They were also able to make some predictions and self connections about the book.

Parents, please remember to write your child's home reading book titles in their diary so teachers can keep track of what students are reading at home. Thanks for your support with this.

Next week we are beginning our focus on reading and writing information texts. We will look at a range of non fiction texts. This focus will culminate with the students writing an assessment piece at the end of the week to showcase their understandings and skills. We look forward to reading their wonderful reports full of all the elements of informative texts.

Our next book will be the book called, 'Let's Save Antarctica'. We will discover why we must save this incredible place from climate change and plastic pollution.

Heart words: This coming fortnight we will be focusing on reviewing this years heart words. We will also conduct another heart word assessment to see if there are any gaps in our forst two lists before we move onto any new hear words.

Phonemes: Next week we will be reviewing phonemes from this term. The following week we will be focusing on the trigraph /igh/ as in light, usually followed by a t.

Morphology: We will be looking at the suffixes -less (example, hopeless, careless- meaning without) and -ful (example hopeful, careful- meaning full of) over the coming fortnight.

Maths:

This fortnight, our Grade 1 students have been revisiting some important math concepts as part of our review. We've been exploring number patterns, practising how to share equally (early division), and strengthening our addition and subtraction skills. Through games, hands-on activities, and group discussions, students are deepening their understanding and building confidence. These review sessions help reinforce key ideas and prepare us for more complex concepts ahead. Thank you for continuing to support your child’s learning at home!

Exploring Family Roles: Past and Present

Over the next two weeks, our Year 1 students will take a fascinating journey through time as they explore how family roles have changed over the years. Using pictures, discussions, and stories, they’ll compare everyday responsibilities from the past and present. They’ll listen to voices from history, sort images into timelines, and reflect on their own family roles. Through engaging activities like a Venn diagram exercise and a fun drawing task, students will develop an understanding of how families have evolved while also recognising the roles that have remained the same.
