Reconciliation Week: 'Bridging Now to Next' 27th May -3rd June

In recognition for Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, the Level 4 students have spent time this week exploring the theme 'Bridging Now to Next' and how we can show our respect for First Nations culture through representation and education.

On Monday, we explored what Sorry Day represents, and explored the theme 'Bridging Now to Next' for Reconciliation Week. This theme represents the importance of connecting past, present, and future efforts in reconciliation for Indigenous culture and communities .

The theme provides a time to reflect and continue the recognition, respect, and acknowledgement of Indigenous culture within our schools, workplaces, and wider community. Through creation, education, and reading texts, this week has provided further opportunity to for us to promote reconciliation each and every day.

Inquiry

The Level 4 students have been researching, sharing, and studying all things celebrations and commemorations! Across the next few weeks, students will be putting their research hats on as they collect information about their chosen celebration or commemoration. The students will combine all the skills we have refined the last few weeks to ensure we gain authentic, detailed information specific for our research criteria.

As we move further through the term, Level 4 students will use this research to create an information booklet about their chosen celebration or commemoration. This booklet will be filled with fantastic writing, creative elements, and provide students with the opportunity to showcase their research skills.

Literacy

The students have been busily reading and unpacking the mentor text Storm Boy, with a focus particularly in understanding what the author is trying to tell us as we analyse word choice and the language used in the novel. As we move further through the narrative, students will not only continue looking at how Colin Thiele used language to engage his readers, but also at how the setting is presented of a rich South Australian landscape and how we can use the text as influence in our own writing.

For writing, students will be using this nature focus to draft, create, and publish their own information reports across the next few weeks. Students will investigate an Australian Barraimal (animal) of their choice, such as Gurrborra (Koala) or Kuyim (Kangaroo). As they research, students will learn how to create an engaging information report sharing their knowledge about their chosen barraimal.

In our Core Literacy sessions, we will be decoding and spelling words that contain phonemes we have been learning the past few weeks. During Morphology, our focus is learning how to build words using different parts such as prefixes, base words and suffixes. Finally, we will be exploring homophones and their meanings.

Numeracy:

Over the past few weeks, our Level 4 students have been exploring various multiplication strategies to deepen their understanding and make multiplying easier.

To put their skills into practice, the students are working on a fun project: planning a class party for 25 guests. They are creating grocery lists with quantities and costs, designing invitations, choosing recipes with measurements and cooking times, and budgeting for decorations and games. It's a great way to apply their maths knowledge to real-life situations!

Assessments are currently underway and we encourage all students to make sure they bring a fully charged lap top to school.
