Reconciliation Week

Here are some photos of Level 4 and 5 students engaged in our project to create a story stick with symbols in aboriginal style. We discussed how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people use symbols to tell their stories, and then using some large sticks, the students worked together to choose colour groups to paint....

...then they planned their symbols, thinking about what is important to them, their interests, nature, places, people who are special to them, animals etc. We looked at some traditional aboriginal symbols as inspiration or students could make up their own...

The final stage was to work together to plan their top layer colours using harmonious or complimentary colours, and decorate the sticks with their symbols to tell their stories.

We listened to some mindful aboriginal music during the classes, and the students were engrossed in their creativity. Then we reflected on the skills we learnt and all the goals we achieved doing this project together. Fantastic effort Level 4 and 5!

Physical Education

Our Foundation to Level 2 students have just wrapped up our unit on throwing and catching. We’ve been working on pointing at our target and keeping our back foot grounded. Ask your child what it means to “squish the bug” and see if they remember!

Next up, we’ll be turning our attention to kicking skills.

For our Year 3 – 6 students, we’re beginning to shift our focus to athletics in the lead-up to our House Athletics Carnival early next term. This week, we’ve been working on finding our lead foot, practising sprint starts, and learning the basics of the long jump.

Below is a copy of the T2 Interschool Sports timetable showing where the 5/6 students play each week.

District Cross Country

Congratulations to the 72 students who proudly represented SEPS at the District Cross Country last Tuesday at Dendy Park!

It can be a little nerve-wracking lining up against other schools, but our students showed loads of enthusiasm, courage, and determination to give it their all, and we couldn’t be prouder. Many achieved personal bests, which is a huge achievement in itself!

A special shoutout to Samual and Ruby from Level 5 and Holly from Level 6, who have qualified to represent our district at the upcoming Division Cross Country on Wednesday at Cornish College. Best of luck, we’ll be cheering you on!

Science

Foundation

Our youngest scientists have been studying day and night, as well as sunrise and sunset.

Level 1 & 2s

Level 1s & 2s are blasting off on a tour of the inner planets. Then we are visiting the Asteroid Belt and making asteroids (cookies).

Level 3 & 4s

Last week we set up an experiment with water in a bottle. We predicted what would happen if this was left in the sun for a week.  This week we analysed the results and started to understand the water cycle.

Level 5 & 6s

We have started our new unit of study, Chaotic Earth. During our initial lesson we imagined that we could cut the Earth in half so that we could study the layers of the Earth. However, we know that the deepest hole ever dug was a mine in Russia. They had to stop digging at a depth of 12km because the tools stopped working. But, who is Alfred Wegener?

Pollinator Gardens

Have you had the chance to wander through the front garden, in front of the Science Room, and to see the pollinator garden planted by Level 4?

We are also thrilled that a group of our parents and Village Zero are working with us to plant a pollinator garden behind Science, beside the flag poles. This garden will connect with a series of gardens around Bayside. We would love for our parents to join us and be involved in this planting:

When:  Friday 20th June

Time:  2.00 - 3.30 pm

Where:  meet at the flagpoles

** You must have a WWCC to be involved in this event.
